“ 'It's a layered cut. That's what Gloria called it. Why does everyone think it's a mullet?' “
I would consider using this book in my classroom because of the relatable scenario in the book and it could teach my students not to judge a book based on its cover.
Hope Is a Ferris Wheel written by Robin Herrera. Chapter 1 p.1-6. Introduces Star, a girl who lives in a trailer park in California, and how she is being picked on and made fun of solely based on her living situation. She then dreams of a plan to make a club specifically just for her friends. This book could be relatable for children who live in a low income or poverty stricken are and get picked on for that reason.
“Hope is a Ferris wheel- It takes low and high; and when you reach the top, it‘s like you can touch the sky! And when it takes you down- hope becomes a thing. That, when you‘re getting off. You take with you to bring.
I would use this book in my future classroom to expose children to other types of kids and that bullying is never okay.
I read this entire book and the first chapter made me cry. It honestly portrays the realities of life for today‘s children. An example of this would be bullying. The characters are both convincing and credible to today‘s child. I feel like most children can relate to these characters or they can feel compassionate towards these characters. This book is both a window and a mirror.
Not everyone comes from the same place, same town, or same state. Star is mad fun of for all of what belongs to her like her family, where she lives, and what she looks like. This book shows that if you stand true to yourself and believe in your abilities, it does not matter what people think. It is important to have acceptance for the work around you. A YA read, and yes it's on my list to read, with both a Ferris wheel on the cover and in the title.
I'm on a MG roll this weekend. Loved this, which would pair well with Raymie Nightingale. This one is on Vermont's #DCFlist
