Enter a Murderer
Enter a Murderer: Inspector Roderick Alleyn #2 | Ngaio Marsh
4 posts | 14 read | 1 to read
Ngaio Marsh was, among other things, a well-respected theatrical producer (having started out as an actress), and her passion for and knowledge of the theater was displayed in many of Alleyn’s adventures. In Enter a Murderer, the Inspector has been invited to an opening night, a new play in which two characters quarrel and then struggle for a gun, with predictably sad results. Even sadder, the gun was not, in fact, loaded with blanks.

I have a stinking headache, so I'm mostly curled up without screens. I found a stack of omnibuses of the Roderick Alleyn books at my parents', which I'd left there when I moved out, and got the urge to reread -- I inhaled the first book on Boxing Day, but gave it a break until now after that. I actually don't remember much of the plots, it's almost like reading a book I've never read before.

The second of the Roderick Alleyn mysteries. Nigel invites Inspector Alleyn to a play, in the course of which an actor is murdered while onstage in front of the audience. Many red herrings, but Alleyn, as always, finds the murderer out. Still no Troy.

It took me longer than I expected to finish this one. I felt that it dragged in the beginning. Inspector Alleyn in this book is different from Inspector Alleyn later in the series (I read #26 in the series before I read this one). Here, he wisecracks more, which I didn‘t necessarily like. The ending was a good twist that I didn‘t see coming, so full points for that. Overall this was a good mystery that entertained and engaged me.

Current read. I have three days left on the lending period, so I‘ve put aside some other books to finish this one. It should be a quick read.
