Narziss and goldmund | Hermann Hesse

Hermann Hesse seems to have had a thing about tramps: Knulp is another vagabond though I'm not sure he got as much sex as Goldmund. And you could argue that Siddhartha is a parallel story.

Your home is earth ; ours is the world of ideas.
You are in danger of drowning in world of senses ;
ours is danger of suffocating ourselves in an airless void.

Hermann Hesse is one of my favorite writers. His books portray so well the inner striving of the artistic spirit. This book is a kind of metaphorical, philosophical tale about the lifelong relationship between Narcissus, who becomes a monk and later an abbot (the Apollonian path of the thinker) and Goldmund, who wanders the world & becomes an artist (the Dionysian path). There is, of course, a balance & unity between the two. Each needs the other.

JamieArc When I walked the Camino de Santiago, since I was carrying everything with me, I limited myself to just one book. This was the book I picked, and it was the perfect companion. It holds fond memories for me 😊 7y
Louise @JamieArc Wow! What a powerful experience! Great choice for a companion book on the Camino! ✨✨✨ 7y

November is #germanlit month. Pulled some books from my shelf & deciding what to read! I think a reread of Narziss and Goldmund is well overdue. I read it aged 15 & remember thinking it the most profound book ever. I wonder if I still will, 25 years later?!?

TNbooklover66 I really want to read The End of Days! 8y

tricours I'm having a frenchlit month for November! Is the November Germanlit just your thing, or is it like... a thing? 8y
vivjm @tricours It is "a" thing! There's a couple of WordPress bloggers that host each year. I will be interested in your French lit posts though - I'm still making my way through Les Mis - I have about 200 pages left! 8y
