Poems | Hermann Hesse

I always find poetry in translation difficult. When a poem doesn‘t work for me, is it the poet or the translator at work? I found most of these good, but none of them great.

First book of 2024 done.

Itchyfeetreader This is such a tough one and gets to the heart of how tough it is to translate. Not just words or grammar but feeling and purpose and a ton do other things besides 4mo

A collection of shorts. I enjoyed the first the most - Augustus. A little bit of sci fi here, and being Hesse his hope & struggle with humanity is evident although not so misanthropic.

Gertrude: A Novel | Hermann Hesse

I really enjoyed this book. The writing felt poetic throughout but still personal and engaging. It was a melancholy mood, and I loved that the main character was a composer and most of the characters were musicians so there was a lot about his connection to music. It‘s billed as “a soul-searching novel of creativity and romantic love.” Not so much on the romantic love but love plays a big part. Tragic ending for one of the characters.

Die Heimkehr | Hermann Hesse

That was the first book by Hermann Hesse I have read ever. Since I have been living near his hometown for one and half years I could totally agree with his description of the black forrest attitude towards strangers. It was a nice and entertaining read.
I will check out the movie as well.
