Three Days and a Life
Three Days and a Life | Pierre Lemaître
5 posts | 4 read | 1 to read
Antoine is twelve years old. His parents are divorced and he lives with his mother in Beauval, a small, backwater town surrounded by forests, where everyone knows everyone's business, and nothing much ever happens. But in the last days of 1999, a series of events unfolds, culminating in the shocking vanishing without trace of a young child. The adults of the town are at a loss to explain the disappearance, but for Antoine, it all begins with the violent death of his neighbour's dog. From that one brutal act, his fate and the fate of his neighbour's six year old son are bound forever. In the years following Rémi's disappearance, Antoine wrestles with the role his actions played. As a seemingly inescapable net begins to tighten, breaking free from the suffocating environs of Beauval becomes a gnawing obsession. But how far does he have to run, and how long will it take before his past catches up with him again? Translated from the French by Frank Wynne

Three Days and a Life by French author Pierre Lemaitre examines the high price of getting away with murder after 12-year old Antoine accidentally kills his young neighbor. Fearing jail, he tells no one and by acts of nature his crime goes unsolved, but Antoine can never truly be free. Full review: https://novelvisits.com/three-days-life-pierre-lemaitre-review/

Mehso-so

Pierre Lemaitre's standalone crime novel (translated from French by Frank Wynne) is a strangely unfulfilling affair that focuses on the nature and effects of guilt and internal rather than external consequences and while the first half is strong, I found the Antoine of the second half to be a slightly underdrawn and unsympathetic protagonist and his behaviour didn't ring true which ultimately made this just an okay read.

The reason why Lemaitre is a master of noir is clear when you read his books. The three longest days in the life of 12yo Antoine are captured with such intensity that it is impossible not to feel the panic and confusion of a kid that, caught in a moment of madness, murdered by mistake one of his friends. An incident that will cast a shadow on Antoine life is told in barely 250 pages of superb psychological character development. Recommended !

When you receive an ARC with a Stephen King blurb about the author it's gotta be worth exploring - right?! I think so! Taking this on my trip to Edinburgh tomorrow. It's a shortish read and light to carry 🤗
