Finally put my hands on this after endless suggestions from you guys. I could see many other fantasy sagas‘ references in this one but still, I enjoyed every single bit. Love the concept that magic is based on real physic and chemistry and the audiobook was amazingly read by Rupert Degas with irish and schottish accents. #fantasy

This is was I was looking for! Classic set mystery with a very unusual and original twist. 8 days to solve a murder that doesn‘t look like it. A ball, in and old mansions stained with a terrible death 20 years earlier. 8 days through the eyes of 8 different guests...except that you don‘t know in which one you are going to wake up the next day. I don‘t like the say that a book is unpdownable , but seems to be the perfect way to describe it!

WanderingBookaneer I‘m convinced! 6y

I have listened to the audiobook in 2 days, so I can‘t say I wasn‘t hooked but towards the end the main character Sydney turns from bad-ass revengeful and powerful magician to the slightly above average female character of urban fantasy. So.. yes, the story is really cool, the tournament is even cooler but the magic society lacked a bit of background to make it really believable. And it could have been 50 pages shorter. Pleasant read overall

blurb
Libretto_Reviews

I am pleased to say that this magical society is quite different from everything I know. The way it is organized , the laws that rule the use of magic, spell casting and tournaments.
Which is something that should not be taken for granted in the Harry Potter era.

Not reading but listening 👂
As much as I like the story I have to say that Madeleine Maby voice is very similar to Siri‘s and listening to this audiobook is kind of weird. Plus she does different characters voices which is something that spoils the experience of listening and I don‘t like.

Terrific read with an original plot.
THE BLINDS was a cinematic and suspenseful thriller different from anything you can find on the shelves right now and that is a huge plus for me. I liked the feeling I had from the beginning of something lurking beneath the surface despite the apparent calm of CAESURA, a town that is one of a kind, a community full of criminal that have no idea of what they have done with their violent memories erased.

The Blinds | Adam Sternbergh

Almost at the end of it and I can say that no matter how the end goes, this is different and I like it. I like the idea of a bunch of strangers with violence erased from their memories, inflicted or endured, hiding somewhere in Texas without knowing who are they hiding from, if they criminals or witnesses .
Original concept for a thriller.

First part was ridiculously accurate description of the average Insta-famous YouTube star. Very unlikeable protagonist, David. Every thing seemed too good so far but now he starts to see the downside of this uber-deal with the devil.
Lesson learned Mr Brown, always read terms and conditions before to check the boxes!

It would be a pick if I had to ignore how difficult it was for me to follow the thread of thoughts that Adamsberg seems to be constantly producing. Adrift in a sea of feelings, considerations, memories and metaphysical conversations between characters that I could not grasp ( and promptly skipped) . But, as a character the french commisair is original and intriguing. Towards the end he gains a bit more humanity and that made him perfect to me.

Hearth breaking.
Ness speaks the unspeakable. The unbearable grief and the human instinct of survival, to keep living. Love is indeed many things.
I don‘t like to be an emotional wreck because of books but I loved this one. And now I will keep a distance from tears jerkers like AMC for a while.

The answer is that it does not matter what you think-the monster said-because your mind will contradict itself a hundred times each day. Your mind will believe comforting lies while also knowing the painful truths that made those lies necessary. And your mind will punish you for believing both.

Bloody January | Alan Parks

Pickpick

I don‘t know where to start with my praises. Vivid set up realistically described. Graphic violence, misogynistic behaviours and a great deal of swearing ( you might get offended but I think is part of the character development). All characters are well draw and Glasgow‘s most violent and dark side is well represented by a police force that draws a very faint line between good and evil. Old school investigations. Looking forward for the next book.

halfdesertedstreets It‘s so interesting how graphic language can be gratuitous or it can actually add to the character development, hey? 6y
Libretto_Reviews Yes, you are right! sometimes is just too much and unnecessary but in this case, despite the c-word is use profusely, it actually works with the character personality so well that without it wouldn‘t be the same. 6y

Just had a look to who Alan Parks is and... he is a Philosophy graduate who worked 20+ years in music industry.
You‘ll never know from when, or who, the next good novel will come. There are writers wannabe that chase the dream but never succeed and then there is fate . In case you are still wandering, yes, I am quite enjoying Bloody January.
McCoy makes me think to Harry Hole and Mia Kruger.

A quick and pleasant read. Urban fantasy with a touch of crime that gets unfortunately a bit lost with a plot that left the secondary story line weekly connected to the main one. Peter Grant , the main character, is witty and hilarious but without affect the grim atmosphere of supernatural crimes.
Aaronovitch talks about magic the way I immagine it would be if were real.
Recommended as a pop-corn read between more demanding books.

Joanne1 This is our January book club pick. I accidentally bought a copy of the graphic novel instead of the regular novel which I enjoyed. I'm yet to read the actual book but I suspect I may feel the same. 6y
Libretto_Reviews @Joanne1 don‘t get me wrong, is a really nice novel with a very original spin into urban fantasy AND supernatural crime. I just felt like a was missing a piece of information to understand the final connection between the murders investigations and the Rivers part. P.S. I didn‘t know there was a graphic novel out there! 6y

A retró kind of Sci-Fi, an epic quest for the control of the Spice, 20.000 years in the future . I barely felt like I was reading a sci-fi and forgiven the most descriptive and boring new age/religion infused parts because of the captivating plot build.
Everyone should read it.

The reason why Lemaitre is a master of noir is clear when you read his books. The three longest days in the life of 12yo Antoine are captured with such intensity that it is impossible not to feel the panic and confusion of a kid that, caught in a moment of madness, murdered by mistake one of his friends. An incident that will cast a shadow on Antoine life is told in barely 250 pages of superb psychological character development. Recommended !

Pretty graphic and twisted the 4MK starts with the serial killer death. Weird right? This peculiar thriller gives his point of view of the story through the pages of a diary and trust me is darker and sicker that you might expect . Clever and engrossing the 4MK is a clear reference to Se7en and a MUST read for 2017 crime fiction fans.
FUN FACT: BARKER will be writing a prequel of DRACULA together with a relative of STOKER himself!

My very first Canadian suspence was an interesting read with a kick ass female character, Nora, that is surely the strength of this debut. A plot with a few holes and a fluctuating paces that goes up and down towards an end that could have been better. A light read for who's looking for a fast paced book to read over the week end and overall a nice read

The way the story of Emma and Jane is told is totally wrong. The author wanted to show us how similar was the life of this two women but sometimes I feel like I was reading the same chapter twice. The story build up until we reach the end and.. yes, the big twist is exactly the one you probably guessed after the 8th chapter. Very explicit in some parts. If you liked #Maestra by Lisa Hilton you might also like THE GIRL BEFORE

Pickpick

LIE WITH ME is a part of the amnesia/psychological thriller genre that relies on unreliable characters or some sort of distorted memory necessary to confuse and disorient the reader. Apart from some pretty impressive character development, Sabine Durrant created a clever and morally complex novel that I read in just one night and that is, indeed, impossible to put down.

Not much profiling as I would expect. RBY is a slow burner and definitely not Lisa's best. I am not a big fan of troubled teens stories because they always ended up been stereotyped but this one was kind of good. There is a twist at the end that change the all story when you think to know what's going on, and I liked that. Neither good or bad. I enjoyed my time with it but I won't say is one if my favorites.

The Chemist | Stephenie Meyer

I started trying to keep a positive attitude towards Meyer. I was pretty happy to know that she wrote an action thriller for adults. I tried not to judge The Chemist because of Twilight. And I failed.
Failed after the 4th cliché in a row in the same paragraph. Failed after the action is put on pause to give space to an unrealistic and juvenile love story.
Should I keep reading ?
Sorry Stephanie, but this is NOT a thriller and is NOT for adults.

Intense and very well written. So well that you can feel what the characters are experiencing and understand their points of views, so well that I felt like I was there witnessing the events. Historically accurate in language and expression and believes of an Ireland that lived deeply influenced by myth and legends but also started to welcome progress and knowledges. A dark and realistic fairytale for adults without happy ending. Beautiful !

I got everything wrong! All the surnames and the narrator personal sympathy made me point to the wrong person 🙀 I just love when a book trick me under my nose, it means it completely got me caught in to it and I missed details as pronouns and physical descriptions. Also, the more I read the more I hope in a happy ending but I am afraid this book is too realistic to have one.

I keep forgetting that the story is told by a professor in 2005. I know is more that 10 years ago now but still seems like a complete different age by the nostalgic way he speaks of Saint Oswald.
Also, I was wondering why I dislike Harrington so much, at this point of the story he is actually a good young boy, maybe a bit cheeky but nothing more. Is just the professor's ideas that influences me so much!
Good writing, Joanne!

post image
Mehso-so

3.5/5 A very enjoyable recall to Agatha Christie's novel. Poirot is still Poirot and the atmosphere is the right one. An impossible murder, a mansion full of possible culprits all with a motive, a sudden change of will made by a rich and old lady and also a silent and grumpy butler. But the story is too long compared to Christie's and the resolution of the case is impossible to guess even for the most careful and experienced readers.
