The Foundation Pit
The Foundation Pit | Robert Chandler, Andre? Platonovich Platonov
3 posts | 6 read | 7 to read
Translated from the Russian by Robert & Elizabeth Chandler and Olga Meerson With notes and an afterword by Robert Chandler and Olga Meerson In Andrey Platonov’s The Foundation Pit, a team of workers has been given the job of digging the foundation of an immense edifice, a palatial home for the perfect future that, they are convinced, is at hand. But the harder the team works, the deeper they dig, the more things go wrong, and it becomes clear that what is being dug is not a foundation but an immense grave. The Foundation Pit is Platonov’s most overtly political book, written in direct response to the staggering brutalities of Stalin’s collectivization of Russian agriculture. It is also a literary masterpiece. Seeking to evoke unspeakable realities, Platonov deforms and transforms language in pages that echo both with the alienating doublespeak of power and the stark simplicity of prayer. This English translation is the first and only one to be based on the definitive edition published by Pushkin House in Moscow. It includes extensive notes and, in an appendix, several striking passages deleted by Platonov. Robert Chandler and Olga Meerson’s afterword discusses the historical context and style of Platonov’s most haunted and troubling work.

Pickpick

Okay I get this book. It is a jet black at time humorous at times tragic critique of the Soviet Union in the 20 and 30‘s from the early industrialisation programs, to the suppression of the intelligentsia, to the collectivisation of the agriculture. Each of the characters reflecting an aspect of society. All starts with action and dreams but in the end nothing is built and much is lost, including the hope for the socialist future.

Libby1 The man in the picture looks like he's delivering a Chinese takeaway! 8y
Oblomov26 @Libby1 Errrr Russian takeaway? But that would be Pelmeni and Vodka 8y
Libby1 @Oblomov26 - it's the shape of the box. American Chinese takeaway comes in boxes like this. In the UK, where I live now, it comes in little plastic (recyclable) boxes. I know this has NOTHING to do with this book! 8y
Oblomov26 @Libby1 lol I was being silly - in Australia it is normal to do the plastic box as well - although the us boxes are becoming popular for noodles 8y

Seem to be on a bit of a Russia kick at the present moment and this may be the strangest to date. Animal farm except the characters are human and working seemingly in the middle of no where to excavate a hole which will form the "all-proletarian home" a project seemingly without end. Dark humour and existentialist thought abounds.

saresmoore Ooh, weird. This sounds great! 8y
