War Dances
War Dances | Sherman Alexie
A bestselling collection of stories and poems from literary icon Sherman Alexie Winner of the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction, War Dances blends short stories, poems, call-and-response, and more into something that only Sherman Alexie could have written. Ordinary men stand at the threshold of profound change, from a story about a famous writer caring for a dying but still willful father, to the tale of a young Indian boy who learns to value his own life by appreciating the deaths of others. Perceptions change, too, as Another Proclamation casts a shadow over Abraham Lincolns Emancipation Proclamation, and Invisible Dog on a Leash limns the heartbreak of shattered childhood illusions. And nostalgia for antiquated technology is tenderly rendered in Ode to Mix Tapes and Ode for Pay Phones. With his versatile voice, Alexie explores love, betrayal, fatherhood, alcoholism, and art in this spirited, soulful, and endlessly entertaining collection, transcending genre boundaries to create something truly unique. This ebook features an illustrated biography including rare photos from the authors personal collection.

I'm not sure what to think or how to describe what I'm feeling. This book is an interesting mix of poetry & short stories that were also poetic. The stories are not beautiful or fantastic but are sad and real, which makes them lovely in their own way. The poetry is what really ties this collection together.

All aboard the Sherman Alexie love train! I believe this is the first time I've finished two books on the same day. Fortunately, this one left a much better impression on me. As @Suet624 noted, the title story of this collection is beautiful. There are so many moments of beauty, humor, and gut punches throughout... just as you'd expect from Alexie. (I felt compelled to highlight a few lines even though this was a library e-book.)

Suet624 Oh, your comments made my heart sing. I'm so glad you loved this book as much as I did. What a wonderful man he is. 7y
kalinichta @Suet624 And your content made me smile. I always enjoy Alexie's books and hope to see him speak in person someday. 7y
JazzFeathers Haven't come around to buy this ond yet, but already read his stories in other collections. I love how his stories are all different but still connected. I particularly love how he uses characters, returning in many stories and yet never exactly the same 7y
kalinichta @JazzFeathers This book is a departure from that. Most of the stories are not connected at all. And only one character named Polatkin shows up. 😄 7y

While looking for his new book at the library, I found this one. A fabulous collection of poetry and short stories. I read the story the book uses as its title several times over the weekend. This particular story about his father uses humor even as he's gently breaking your heart. I love his writing.
