This was an “Ehh” addition to the series for me. I‘ve really enjoyed Hoyt‘s Maiden Lane series overall—Darling Rogue and Notorious Pleasures being the best IMO. Dyemore dreamily (and longingly) wants to protect Iris from danger and himself—of course!—and sees her as the light to his darkness—a phrase repeated often—yet she constantly has to persuade him to take a chance on her and their relationship, which got a little old for me. #romance

It's a pick due to being a quick easy historical romance. However, I have some reservations about it too: Definitely the darkest of the Maiden Lane series yet - but a bit melodramatic in places. The plot is straightforward and main characters well-developed but I wish the heroine was less of a damsel in distress. She is a brave spirit but unfortunately frequently allows her sentiments to get the best of her. Still not a bad read.

I really liked this but something is off, maybe. The timeline feels too compressed, imo, to really allow the romance to develop. Also, I think Raphael's original plan - infiltrate the evil cult - was pretty half-baked (because you have to participate in something icky then?). Iris surprised me as a heroine. She may not fight with swords but she stands her ground and picks apart Raphael's mental blocks until he is able to function as a human again.
