Demagoguery and Democracy
Demagoguery and Democracy | Patricia Roberts-Miller
4 posts | 4 read | 1 to read
A clear-eyed guide to demagoguery—and how we can defeat it What is demagoguery? Some demagogues are easy to spot: They rise to power through pandering, charisma, and prejudice. But, as professor Patricia Roberts-Miller explains, a demagogue is anyone who reduces all questions to us vs. them. Why is it dangerous? Demagoguery is democracy’s greatest threat. It erodes rational debate, so that intelligent policymaking grinds to a halt. The idea that we never fall for it—that all the blame lies with them—is equally dangerous. How can we stop it? Demagogues follow predictable patterns in what they say and do to gain power. The key to resisting demagoguery is to name it when you see it—and to know where it leads.

Mehso-so

A poorly supported premise in my view, but it makes the reader thing about how others speak, particularly in the political realm.

This is a must read for every person ever. Despite its small size, it takes a while to get through, especially if you take the time (and you should!) to really consider each passage. Without the last chapter that gives strategies for combatting demagoguery, it would be a pretty depressing read but luckily the author provides some answers. And it will fit easily in my fanny pack, so that‘s a plus from me 😊

You really have no excuse not to read this book. Look at its compact size! The ideas expressed inside are powerful and the message huge: demagoguery can be defeated by compassion. There's also some fancy,
Smarty-pants rhetorical terms that will disarm even the most committed and argumentative sheeple. Ask yourself, can you really afford not to read this book with our democracy at stake? 🇺🇸

LuLeeBelle I was smitten by the cover design, but what you describe feels like my internal struggle explained. I guess I HAFTA read it now 7y

What is demagoguery? Does the definition proffered sound like anything familiar to you? (So far I'm loving this little gem of a book by a professor of rhetoric.) 💎
