And the Band Played On
And the Band Played On: The enthralling account of what happened after the Titanic sank | Christopher Ward
2 posts | 4 read | 4 to read
On 14th April 1912 the Titanic struck an iceberg on her maiden voyage and sank. Fifteen hundred passengers and crew lost their lives. As the order to abandon ship was given, the orchestra took their instruments on deck and continued to play. They were still playing when the ship went down. The violinist, 21 year-old Jock Hume, knew that his fiancée, Mary, was expecting their first child, the author's mother. One hundred years later, Christopher Ward reveals a dramatic story of love, loss and betrayal, and the catastrophic impact of Jock's death on two very different Scottish families. He paints a vivid portrait of an age in which class determined the way you lived - and died. An outstanding piece of historical detective work, AND THE BAND PLAYED ON is also a moving account of how the author's quest to learn more about his grandfather revealed the shocking truth about a family he thought he knew, a truth that had been hidden for nearly a hundred years.

I really liked this. The first half of the book was more focused on both Jock and the aftermath of the Titanic. There was also some look (I think for comparison purposes) at millionaire John Jacob Astor and his subsequent recovery and his body‘s trip home. The second half really did focus on Jock‘s family; his father did not like Mary and there were “squabbles” (to put it mildly) and legal battles. Cont in comments..

LibraryCin I love reading more about the Titanic and I also love biographies, so this worked really well for me. There are plenty of nice photos included, as well. I read the paperback, which had a few updates that didn‘t get into the hardcover edition 6y

I said I'd be chaperoning a band trip and wouldn't get much reading done. No reading this weekend. But, the kids placed 1st in their group, received the top rating of Superior and took 1st place overall! Definitely worth the trip from that perspective. More so, I got to spend the weekend with my husband and kids. Then they surprised me with this new bag and a B&N gift card so I can fill it with books! 💙📚
