Rosa Parks
Rosa Parks | Lisbeth Kaiser
4 posts | 8 read | 5 to read
In the Little People, Big Dreams series, discover the lives of outstanding people, from designers and artists, to scientists. All of them achieved incredible things, yet each began life as a child with a dream. Rosa Parks grew up during segregation in Alabama, but she was taught to respect herself and stand up for her rights. In 1955, Rosa refused to give up her seat to a white man on a segregated bus, sparking the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Her decision had a huge impact on civil rights, eventually leading to the end of segregation on public transport. Rosa was described as the mother of the freedom movement. This inspiring story of Rosas life is moving, and approachable for young readers.

This Biography would be great for choral reading in a small group. I think that students could use this to better understand the importance of Rosa Parks as it tells the details of who she was and why she did what she did. It goes from when she said no on the bus all the way through how she never stopped fighting for what she believed in. Students can learn and discuss the importance and how we are where we are today because of her #UCFLAE3414SU19

Macker11 Students will use ESOL #2 which promotes cooperation as they work in the small groups discussing and reading this book together. Which also goes with UDL 8.3. I think when students learn together about someone so impactful that was young, can help them be intrigued to learn more. http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/calendar-activities/rosa-parks... this activity can help students put themselves in 1955. 5y
DawnS I love this! I just read a book that I would think is targeted for younger students on Rosa Parks as well, Back of the Bus. I like your website link and activity. If I modified it just a bit, I think the focus of the assignment could still be accomplished even for younger students. 5y
Macker11 That‘s what I think too @DawnS children can learn about these important figures early on 5y
Apeacock12 Love these books!! I found one on Dolly Parton. This author has a lot of great biographies about different women. 5y
DrSpalding As you know, read write think is a high-quality resource where you can find excellent lesson activities. I have not seen these books and will look for them in the future. I like the illustrations! 5y

4⭐️ This is a new series that looks like it springs from Little Golden Books, called Little People Big Dreams. This edition looks at Rosa Parks and the lessons she learned from childhood. It was those lessons that helped her no give up her seat on the bus, and it was thos lessons that partly maker her the icon she is today. This book has a great way of telling the story, but if I were honest I like the I am… series better.
