Blitzed!
Blitzed!: The Autobiography of Steve Strange | Steve Strange
2 posts | 1 to read
Steve Strange was head boy of the New Romantic movement. He ran the best clubs in London - Billy's, Blitz and Camden Palace - which defined the glitzy banality of the era; places where Spandau Ballet and Boy George came to life. He formed, with Midge Ure, Visage, which became one of the biggest bands of the time, selling millions of records and gaining tabloid notoriety.BLITZED! recounts the rise and fall of the Blitz Kid from the excess of the early eighties - the clubs, the people, the music, the money - to his time spent recovering in Ibiza and India, the subsequent steady decline into cocaine and heroin abuse and his rise back to sanity. Steve recounts how he lost all his possessions in a house fire and days later learned of the death of his close friend Michael Hutchence. Within a couple of years Paula Yates had also committed suicide and Strange had ended up back in South Wales, homeless, mentally unstable and facing a court order for shoplifting. He recounts how he pulled himself back from the brink. He now manages a band, is clean, is re-recording Visage tracks and is ready to tell his amazing story.

There‘s a lot of them in this. As the face of Visage I loved Steve, spent hours copying his make up and so wanted to go to the Blitz club.
He became a sad parody of himself and I found this quite a sad book. He made a lot of mistakes. Just when he seemed to get himself together again, he died 😢

Cinfhen Always tragic when they can‘t quite pull it together 😓 5y

My pick today (sorry!) If Steve couldn't be Bowie he'd have to settle for being in the video. I loved Visage's first 2 albums - Steve wasn't the musical inspiration of the band (that was mainly Midge Ure) but he was the look. And what a look 💟 spent hours copying his make up - got sent home from school for 'looking like a clown' - that was the point. I so wanted to go to the Blitz club.

TrishB @Balibee146 he found it very hard to adjust to not being famous anymore and because he wasn't really the musical talent he just lost his way in life. 7y
Balibee146 that's really sad....poor guy. I loved my Davids best - Sylvian and Vanian 😏 just mainlined Japan tracks during the dog walk yay 7y
TrishB @Balibee146 oh god Sylvian 💟💟 Hubby loves The Damned! 7y
Cinfhen Sounds like a really sad ending to such a glamorous beginning 💔 7y
Balibee146 @TrishB he's still awesome. Would love to read Mick Karn's memoir but it is hard to get hold of. Also liked stuff like Selector and The Specials. Gosh the late 70s and early 80s was fab! 7y
TrishB @Balibee146 Hubby has Mick Karns book (there's not many music books he doesn't have!). But I know it's a bit of a collectors item now. 7y
Balibee146 @TrishB I may treat myself at some point - would MrB recommend it? Spotted a Depeche Mode book the size of a brick in HMV yesterday and was very tempted! 7y
TrishB @Balibee146 will let you know when he gets in! Which DM one was it? We've got a few of those - I've even read a couple! 7y
Balibee146 Oooh ta it was Stripped I was flicking through? 7y
TrishB @Balibee146 Hubby said if you're a mad Japan fan or bass guitarist you'll enjoy the Mick Karn book. It is very Japan - arty and self-centred 😀 Stripped is a good DM book - I enjoyed that one. 7y
Balibee146 Oooh thanks to MrB.... Sounds like two more for the TBR then. Just realised that in the past few days you've seen and liked a post about with the novel I've hunted down to send you... Dammit lol! Also....hope you are okay with swearing.... Lots and lots of swearing... Speak now if not heh heh xx 7y
TrishB @Balibee146 I couldn't even guess which one! Swear away 😀 xx 7y
