Children of the Night
Children of the Night | Dan Simmons
7 posts | 14 read | 20 to read
"Simmons writes like a hot-rodding angel." –Stephen King An evil legacy comes to life in this classic and ultimately human novel about believable vampires, featuring a brand-new introduction by Dan Simmons. Children of the Night will take you to a place that no one knows—yet all of us fear. In a desolate orphanage in post-Communist Romania, a desperately ill infant is given the wrong blood transfusion—and flourishes rather than dies. For immunologist Kate Neuman, the infant's immune system may hold the key to cure cancer and AIDS. Kate adopts the baby and takes him home to the States. But baby Joshua holds a link to an ancient clan and their legendary leader—Vlad Tsepes, the original Dracula – whose agents kidnap the child. Against impossible odds and vicious enemies– both human and vampire – Kate and her ally, Father Mike O'Rourke, steal into Romania to get her baby back. "A mesmerizing tour through the ghostly, gray tatters of Romania." –Publishers Weekly "Simmons gives a chilling description of post-Ceausescu Romania and neatly ties the vampire legend into political history to create a new and clever twist to the idea of the vampire's craving for blood." –Library Journal "His best novel ever... Toothsomely well written." –Kirkus "Brilliant ideas... The most rigorous and interesting scientific rationale for vampirism I've ever seen... You keep turning the pages." –Locus

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description or reason for wanting to read the book. Some are old and some will be new. Don't judge me - I have a lot of books.

Interesting take on the legend of Vlad Dracula This is also a companion book to Simmons Summer of Night as it follows one of the characters as an adult.

And this completes the serials of cereals, paired. Simmons' novel takes us to the heart of the vampire myth, Romania. In this case however it is the eighties and the central protagonist is Kate Neuman a hematologist searching for a cure for AIDS.

Father Mike O'Rourke appears in the novel as well. If you have read Summer of Night by Simmons you will know he is one of the main protagonist of the novel. In the latter Mike O'Rourke is 12.

Pickpick

Dan Simmons is not only one of my favorite writers, I think he is one of the most under rated authors working. I've read quite a few of his books and whatever genre it's been has been to my liking. His take here on vampires is original and was a page turner for me.

#photoadaynov16 Day 20 I read this is in 2013 and couldn't put it down. While there is a portion set in the states, it begins and ends in Romania. This reminds me that I really need to read more of Simmons work. I even have a couple on my shelf. #setineasterneurope
