Earth Weeps, Saturn Laughs | ?Abd al-?Az?z F?ris?
3 posts | 2 read
Earth Weeps, Saturn Laughs opens with the return of Khalid Bakhit, a government employee, to his hometown in Oman after a time away in the big city, and concludes with his return to the city with a new maturity born of a series of wrenching encounters with reality. Khalid's return home, sparked by his flight from a painful love affair, coincides with events that reveal the force of long-established traditions that have a stranglehold on the town: from racial prejudice, to religious bigotry, to ossified patterns of leadership. Khalid's awakening and transformation are catalyzed by his encounters with a certain "Saturnine poet" who, in the course of chasing after an elusive ode, has stumbled upon this unnamed village. For a period of time "the Saturnine" becomes Khalid's closest companion: listening to his woes, helping him see himself with new eyes, and imparting to him a wisdom from a world beyond untainted by human smallness. "As the full moon listened in, Walad Sulaymi said, 'Thirty years ago I heard my grandfather say to my father (God have mercy on them both), "If God allows a country to be chastised, He causes everyone who has left it to come back." So here you are again, and with your return, that completes the number of those who left the village and have come back. Mark my words: the chastisement will descend soon.'"

My #weeklyforecast is compilation of books for different challenges. I will finished the tagged book today, The Employees is my April bookspin book (but it was delivered on Friday), and because we have rain (and the book is slim) I think I'll be able to read it today also.

rockpools Hooray - it arrived at last! And I love the title of the tagged. 3y
BarbaraBB I wanted to read Earth Weeps too purely for its cover! 3y
Simona @rockpools Finally! I ordered it directly from publisher, and they were very apologetic, also offering huge discount on the next purchase. I understand that for small publishers can be such a spotlight big problem to pleased all the interested parties, but at the same time I think that they are warned in advance so that they can prepare for increased demands .... 3y

BarbaraBB And I am super curious about The Employees! 3y
Simona @BarbaraBB Some parts are interesting, but in general it is quite boring ... I have around 50 pages to the end, and for now is between so-so and pan. 🤷‍♀️ 3y
BarbaraBB That is disappointing - I had hope the author would make something special of a boring subject 3y
Cinfhen I love this photo 😍 3y

Earth Weeps, Saturn Laughs | ?Abd al-?Az?z F?ris?
Pickpick

#Oman #readingaroundtheworld A strange and poeticly modern book about a very small village in Oman that is stuck in its ways and condemned to carry its past into a changing future. It is narrated by 7 different characters, including one poet from Saturn and the reader gathers the nature of the discontent, the historical curses, the central place of religion both culturally and spiritually all through these different voices.

Just for the fun of it. My favourite planet Mars, but they're answer tree is pretty good at getting right some of my personaly traits.

cobwebmoth I can't resist a quiz. I got Neptune. 6y
wanderinglynn Me either! I got Uranus & it‘s fairly accurate. (Although my fave planet is Saturn.) (edited) 6y
CouronneDhiver I got Jupiter - it‘s all about discernment and consistently operating within your own moral compass 6y

tournevis @cobwebmoth @CouronneDhiver So did you get your fave planet at all? 6y
tournevis @cobwebmoth @wanderinglynn @CouronneDhiver Also, what do you need to say to get Earth? 6y
cobwebmoth When I was young my favorite was Saturn, but the Neptune description was a pretty good match for my personality.(It was about being creative, but isolated, and misunderstood.) 6y
