Mortal Causes
Mortal Causes: An Inspector Rebus Mystery | Ian Rankin
8 posts | 11 read | 2 to read
The sixth novel featuring Inspector John Rebus, available for the first time as an e-book and with an exclusive introduction by author Ian Rankin. Inspector John Rebus hates the Edinburgh Festival. He especially hates that last Saturday night. He has spent years on the police force confronting it, avoiding it, and cursing it, but most of the time he still gets caught up in it. Nevertheless, this is an honored tradition of Scotland, and a happy one at that. But amid the blaring noise created by the music, laughter, and toasts of "Slainte" as glasses of whiskey are swilled, another traditionone older than music, happiness, and drink itselfhas traveled to Edinburgh and nested itself in the medieval quarter of Mary King's Close. There, beneath the streets of Edinburgh, Inspector Rebus finds the lifeless body of Billy Cunningham swinging from a butcher's hook and knows that his problems have only begun. When Big Ger Cafferty, the ruthless gangster whose sphere of influence extends well beyond the bars that the Inspector himself put him behind, discovers that Bill, his only son, has been brutally murdered, Rebus finds himself with more motivation than his duty can provide to find Billy's killer. But when the police pathologist reports that the young man was killed by professional hands, Rebus finds himself up against a force that could frighten Big Ger himself.

Finished my first book for the #AwesomeAugust readathon, one sent to me from a #BookCrossing friend!

This Rebus mystery had the Edinburgh Festival as a backdrop and dealt with themes of organized crime and radical political groups.

@Andrew65

Andrew65 Love Rebus! 4y
kwmg40 @Andrew65 I love Rebus too, and I‘ve always wanted to visit Scotland. (Your #VirtualTour photos make me want to tour the UK even more!) 4y

The next in the Detective Rebus series. Not as thrilled with this one, but it reads quickly and all of John Rebus‘ foibles are on display. He gets bounced around by different law enforcement branches and different criminal branches. Not a neatly wrapped package, but potential for future conflict. This is one of my favorite mystery series. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Rebus number 6 and Rankin has hit his stride. A gruesome murder leads to an investigation into Loyalist paramilitaries in Belfast and their Scottish links. John Rebus is one of the most well-rounded, flawed, attractive and cliché-free detectives in the genre.

Detective John Rebus is always a great character to read about in Ian Rankin books

Jinster Oo I've been meaning to read Rankin for a while but just haven't got round to researching and picking. Any advice? I've read Larsson, Nesbo and a few others, are they similar? ☺ 5y
bookaholic1 @Jinster pretty well, my first Ian book was THE FALLS years ago and was hooked. He seems to grab you at the beginning and keeps you there. He's an easy read too. I haven't read them in order. He's definetly up there as a great writer. I would pick one up at a second hand store or library, just to see what you think. That's what I do🤞👌👍📚 5y

I wasn‘t going to participate in Dewey‘s #readathon because I have an out-of-town commitment that will take most of the day. However, I love this event so much and have done it for so many years that I just had to sign up. At least I can listen to an audiobook while driving, and hopefully I‘ll get to one of these books on my stack when I get home!

A Rebus book is always a good time, despite the grimness of the murders. I love visiting Edinburgh through these pages. This installment, despite being written in the 90s, doesn't feel that dated. Technology takes a back seat to the investigation.
