Wind in His Heart
Wind in His Heart | Charles de Lint
6 posts | 4 read | 4 to read
De Lint's first adult fantasy novel in 8 years weaves a rich tapestry of story with classic CdL elegance. Young Thomas Corn Eyes sees into the otherworld, but all he wants to do is get off the rez. Steve Cole escaped from his rock star life to disappear into the desert and mountains. Fifteen-year-old barrio kid Sadie Higgins has been discarded once too often. Blogger Leah Hardin needs to leave Newford, come to terms with the loss of her best friend, and actually engage with her life. When these lives collide in the Hierro Maderas Mountains, they must struggle to escape their messy pasts and find a way to carve a future for themselves. They don't just have to learn how to survive. They have to learn how to fly.

I really enjoyed this story. I liked the Native American folklore/mythology and how de Lint linked it to his Newford mythology. The characters were interesting and a somewhat meandering plot kept my attention despite all of the different paths it took.

He had me with his description of the prickly pear boys in the first line;small cacti hanging out by the big saguaro; who are not exactly in the same place from one morning to the next. Thomas Corn Eyes sees them and others not of this world, but wants to escape the reservation;Steve is a rock star turned desert rat with a fox/antelope girlfriend; fantastic cast mixing past & future collide in a magical American Southwest. Pure enjoyment!
