The Hummingbirds
The Hummingbirds | Ross McMeekin
4 posts | 4 read | 7 to read
-A debut novel reminiscent of Nathaniel West that turns a jaundiced eye on Hollywood to explore the relationship between power, violence, and beauty. _x000D__x000D_-Ross McMeekin is a promising new voice whose work has appeared in Virginia Quarterly Review, Tin House, Shenandoah, Redivider, PANK, The Rumpus, and more. _x000D__x000D_- Author edits a prose journal Spartan, which was listed by Flavorwire as one of the "Ten Unique and Funky Lit Mags to Check Out in 2015," and referred to by The Seattle Review of Books as an "...awesome Seattle lit mag." _x000D__x000D_-Both sexy and disturbing, this book deals with issues like domestic violence, alcohol and drug abuse, gender relations, and class conflicts. _x000D__x000D_-Breathes new life into the classic California-noir narrative with characters who have survived sex cults, marriage-for-survival, and the decay of the American dream.

I have to admit after I read this I had to think about it. It‘s a good debut, I liked the main, flawed character, Ezra. There is a a lot of depth to this novel. The ending was a great fitting for the rest of the novel. I could see why some would find it a bit odd but for some reason after hind sight I found some rather well hidden life lessons!

I should have backed out at "California Noir" but I read it anyway. I would've preferred less angst, more story, a different ending, and, well, a different book tbh.

This is a gem! Aging starlet seduces groundskeeper whose mother was a cult leader. Producer-husband finds out and trouble ensues. Trite little plot? Absolutely not. This is a nuanced and poignant look at fame, wealth, poverty, beauty, betrayal, and redemption. A book to savor, beautifully written passages! Out in Feb. Thanks to NetGalley. Oh, and the hummingbird is a cool little symbol to enjoy!

Cathythoughts Well sold. I want to read this 👍 7y
Alfoster @Cathythoughts I don‘t think you will be disappointed! And it was a debut novel too!😀 7y

Alfoster @minkyb Thanks! I agree that the word limit makes it difficult to get in everything you‘d like to say! 7y
