Disrobed: How Clothing Predicts Economic Cycles, Saves Lives, and Determines the Future | Syl Tang
3 posts | 1 read | 2 to read
We may not often think of our clothes as having a function beyond covering our naked bodies and keeping us a little safer from the elements. But to discount the enormous influence of clothing on anything from economic cycles to the future of water scarcity is to ignore the greater meaning of the garments we put on our backs. Disrobed vividly considers the role that clothing plays in everything from natural disasters to climate change to terrorism to geopolitics to agribusiness. Chapter by chapter, Tang takes the reader on an unusual journey, telling stories and asking questions that most consumers have never considered about their clothing. Why do bankers wives sell off their clothes and how does that presage a recession? How is clothing linked to ethanol and starvation on the African continent? Could RFID in clothing save the lives of millions of people in earthquakes around the world? This book takes an everyday item and considers it in a way that readers may not have previously thought possible. It tackles topics relevant to today, everything from fakes in the museums to farm-to-table eating, and answers questions about how we can anticipate and change our world in areas as far-reaching as the environment, politics, and the clash of civilizations occurring between countries. Much like other pop economics books have done before, the stories are easily retold in water-cooler style, allowing them to be thoughtfully considered, argued, and discussed.

A quick & often fascinating look at how our clothing impacts the world in so many ways from predicting the 2016 & 2008 elections & economic trends, to safety, terrorism, the environment & world events. Find out why avocado toast is the new 'blood diamond' of breakfast. And yes,I paired it with 🥑🍞with cream cheese, pickled onions, hardboiled egg & 'everything bagel' seasoning. 😬#sorrynotsorry 😋on my blog book tour review. Link 👇🏻#nonfiction

WarpedSweetness I didn't know everything bagel seasoning exists. I think I need that. I love Everything bagels. 6y
DebinHawaii @WarpedSweetness it's awesome. I had it just sitting in my cupboard, forgotten from my last trip to Oregon. 😱This one is Trader Joe's but I linked to a recipe from Food Network on the post. I had it on egg salad today! 😋 6y
WarpedSweetness @DebinHawaii I know. I saved it. Lol The closet Trader Joe's to me is in Utah I think, like two and a half hours. But...I've been wanting to go to Oregon since I'm close now. This is a good excuse! Lol I'm craving a bagel now. 6y
Bookzombie 🤤 I‘m already in bed for the night, but now I want this. I‘m going to have to find or make that seasoning. 6y

Day 27 #UncannyOctober #Treat 🎃Friday is a treat in itself, as is a slice of spinach-mushroom-garlic pizza for dinner (2/$8 slices means one for tomorrow) 🍕& pairing it with leftover Quinoa Tabbouleh. I was curious about the White Candy Corn M&Ms-so I'll let you know if they are a treat after I try them, (I'm guessing not!)😆& I'm just starting this NF book for review next week & think it sounds interesting-clothing predicting economic cycles.

ReadingOver50 I tried those m&ms and didn‘t like them at all 😖 6y
DebinHawaii @ReadingOver50 I am guessing I'll have the same result so I have backup good chocolate as a treat! 😆🍫👍 6y
