I'm really enjoying Tommy & Tuppence! I was surprised by the long time gap from their first adventure but glad they are still happily married, although a bit bored. The detective agency was such a fun way for them to spend their time & great for the short story format here. I admit, most of the references to famous detectives went over my head as I'm not familiar with most of them. But it didn't hinder my understanding or enjoyment

It‘s time for our #ChristiesCapers discussion! There are questions posted as spoilers that can be found on my feed, the book‘s feed, or by searching the group‘s hashtags.

Next month, we learn about The Mysterious Mr. Quin! Official post tomorrow (hopefully). #AgathaChristieClubR3

BarbaraJean Yay! I‘m hoping to maybe finish the book this afternoon… I‘ll pop into the discussion when I do! 4w

5. Let's now turn our attention to the mysteries themselves. Did you have a favorite mystery from the collection? A least favorite? Any aspects of the mysteries that stood out for you that you wish to discuss? #ChristiesCapers #AgathaChristieClubR3

kspenmoll Let me think & get back to you. Hard to choose! 4w
MallenNC I really liked the one at the beginning when Tuppence conspired with the “missing” woman. And The Man in Mist was actually kind of creepy, which was a change from some of the other stories. 4w
kelli7990 I don‘t have a favorite. 4w
willaful The masquerade story always seemed very sad to me and I thought Christie did a nice job with the “Father Brown“ story. The failed melodrama of the one with the arctic explorer was pretty funny. (Though I doubt that poor woman will be happy!) 4w

4. Tommy and Tuppence running a “pretend“ detective agency! This is the theme that carries us through the mysteries. What did you think of the detective agency and the ploys they would use in the office to make potential clients feel like it was an extremely busy detective agency? #ChristiesCapers #AgathaChristieClubR3

Aims42 I LOVED how each story started with their assistant (I‘m so sorry for his name slipping my name right now) giving the same spiel to every new client 🤣 I cracked up each time 4w
kspenmoll Very comical! Theatrical! 4w
MallenNC I liked how they‘d spy on the new client for a bit before the meeting 4w
BarbaraJean Their little ploys cracked me up! How Tommy would always be on the phone with Scotland Yard... and the peepholes in the wall so they could spy on clients! 3w

3. As many of us mentioned in our reviews this month, this is just a fun book to read--light, comical, and a fast read of individual mysteries tied together by the detective agency. Let's first talk about the parodies. Christie adds elements of well-known detectives in 1929, including Poirot, comically acknowledging catchphrases, mannerisms, foibles, etc.

Who did you spot mentioned? #ChristiesCapers #AgathaChristieClubR3

Aims42 I loved this common thread throughout all the stories! It really tied them together rather than just being a collection of short stories with only the 2 MCs in common with them. I thought it was interesting Agatha kept the Poirot parody until the end 👏😏 4w
kspenmoll The parody was unexpected & fun! I enjoyed the way they donned various famous detectives personnas & crime solving techniques. (edited) 4w
MallenNC This was the most fun part of the collection. Some of the detectives weren‘t familiar to me but I definitely noticed Holmes and Watson, Father Brown, and of course Poirot‘s little grey cells. 4w
willaful I didn't know most of them but I remember looking into them after I first read this. (Pre-internet, it was difficult!) I think the jokes wear surprisingly well, given how obscure most of them are now. Father Brown and Holmes and Poirot were the ones I knew too. Or I may have started reading Father Brown because of this? 4w
BarbaraJean I really liked the framing of this one, giving the overall arc of the detective agency, but then offering them the freedom to take little or big cases along the way. I haven't liked Christie's short stories that much in the past--they wrap up too quickly for me--but because of the larger framing, I liked these much better. I wish I'd known more of the parody references! 3w

2. We know several years have passed since we last solved mysteries with Tommy and Tuppence. Think about their portrayal in The Secret Adversary; what of their characters have stayed the same? What has changed? #ChristiesCapers #AgathaChristieClubR3

Aims42 I feel like Tommy became more snippy? I wasn‘t a fan of him calling Tuppence an idiot on more than one occasion 🤨 But she‘s a strong woman so she can dish it right back (and rightfully so!!). I‘m intrigued enough with their relationship to keep reading their series 4w
kspenmoll Tommy was more grouchy & he did as @Aims42 stated, say demeaning things to her. She is a confident woman & does not need his approval. 4w
Aims42 @kspenmoll I actually gasped the first time he called her that - I went full Protective Mode and thought, “Excuse me? What did you just call her?!” Says a lot for Agatha‘s writing, not many authors would get that reaction from me 4w
See All 7 Comments
MallenNC I liked Tuppence a lot more int these stories. Agree that Tommy had some not great parts of his personality and those showed more in these stories. 4w
willaful Oh, I thought it was just the audiobook I chose! I guess I read Tommy as more playfully bantering in my head. 4w
willaful I wonder if Tommy's snippiness was a reflection of Christie's own unhappy marriage? 4w
BarbaraJean I felt like Tuppence had matured a bit--she felt more considered in her approach, taking more calculated risks instead of rushing into things as much. She was still a much more active character than Tommy, which I liked. I felt like there was more unspoken understanding between them--one or the other would swoop in, having figured out what the other one meant or needed--which tracks with their relationship timeframe. 3w

1. This is our second book featuring Tommy and Tuppence. Overall, what did you think of this collection of stories? How does it compare to the first book, The Secret Adversary? #ChristiesCapers #AgathaChristieClubR3

Aims42 I enjoyed this short story format 🤩 It kept me engaged 4w
kspenmoll I also liked the short stories- felt it expanded their detection talents. 4w
MallenNC I enjoyed the short story format. I liked how they would adopt a famous detective persona in the different stories. 4w

Cuilin Loved the short story format. Very comforting to dip in knowing everything will be solved in a matter of moments. 4w
willaful It's a good fit for their personalities. Quick and snappy. And they do get more chances to really use their wits. 4w
BarbaraJean I liked the short story format--more fast-paced, and I liked the way we got to see them in a number of different settings and types of mysteries. On the other hand, I often found the short stories easy to figure out and wished I could have been surprised more! 3w

This cover, oh this cover! Tommy's top hat is possessed? Albert has been turned into a dog boy? WHAT IS HAPPENING?!

I've read this fun collection many times, so tried an audiobook. There are quite a few; mine was narrated by Daniel Philpott, who does a good job on the many different accents. I felt he made T&T sound a little too sardonically sarcastic, but perhaps that's in keeping with their determined un-sentimentality.

Reading on #Litsy with Christie‘s Capers (Reading Agatha Christie's books in publication order) Hosted by @Librarybelle #AgathaChristieClubR3

4 Stars • Tommy and Tuppence Beresford, now married and bored, take over a detective agency as a front for British Intelligence to catch spies. Instead, they gleefully solve 15 light-hearted, self-contained cases, ⬇️

suvata playfully imitating famous fictional detectives (Sherlock Holmes, Father Brown, etc.). Witty, romantic, and comedic, with a faint spy thread. More cozy parody than thriller.

I got slightly confused and read November's #ChristieCapers book instead of October's 😂 I love Tommy and Tuppence, and the concept here is fun. However, this one always falls a little flat for me because I'm just not familiar enough with the classic detectives Christie references throughout the book. Still, some of the mysteries are quite good, and I do love the way Christie spoofs Hercule Poirot at the end.

I loved this Tommy & Tuppence novel! I love their funny banter, & this one saw them make references to other fictional detectives, including Sherlock & Poirot. Short stories connected by a bigger mystery—T & T are asked by Mr. Carter to run a detective agency to help catch a group of criminals. These 2 are quickly becoming my favorite Christie detectives—maybe even above Miss Marple.

I don't read short story collections by Agatha Christie as a rule. I ended up reading this one almost unwittingly. Likemost short story collections, it was a mixed bag. Tommy and Tuppence open up a detective agency and taking inspiration from various classic fictional detectives proceed to solve miscellaneous cases. I didn't know most of the fictional characters but the playful banter between Tommy and Tuppence was fun, nonetheless.

Honestly, not a great reading week for my #bookreport. Outsider was fantastic. I read about 100pgs of One Paris Summer before bailing - despite reading other Swank books before & enjoying them, this one was just FULL of spoiled, whiny, bratty teenagers & I COULD NOT deal with them. Acceptable Risk was an ARC, so I reread Collateral Damage. It had been just long enough for me to forget details but not long enough to forget what actually ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) happens, so it wasn't the most engaging read & took me a long time to get through. Acceptable Risk was really just a so-so read with uneven pacing & a weirdly convoluted plot & took me about twice as long to read as a book that size usually does. I would have bailed if it hadn't been for a review. I'm quite behind on P&P but hoping to catch up this weekend. Still really enjoying Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat, which is delightfully informative & ⬇ 5y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) engaging. Just started Partners in Crime last night. It's a reread for #agathachristieclubr2 & since it was actually July's book I thought I should probably get on it! 😂 All in all August wasn't a fabulous reading month, but I'm getting myself organized for September & hoping for the best!!!

TheAromaofBooks @Cinfhen - Her other books I read weren't YA & I didn't realize this one was until I picked it up. Sometimes I like that genre, but this was one of those “BOOHOO I'm TRAPPED IN PARIS for the WHOLE SUMMER so MY LIFE IS OVER“ ...!!! Then there was this evil stepsister who is supposedly 18 but does stuff like trip the MC in front of her friends & steal her book... I just didn't find her believable and she has NO motivation for being evil. Not for me! 5y
Cinfhen I either HATE or LOVE the YA books I‘ve picked up....they definitely leave a strong impression, for me!!!! 5y

This was so much fun! Tommy and Tuppence are just the right amount of bubbly and clever for me to find them fun rather than irritating. Each story in this collection parodies a different detective, but you don‘t need to get the parody to enjoy the story. Hugh Fraser reads the audio and is perfect, especially because the last story parodies Hercule Poirot 😂

I was quite impressed with this collection of short stories. While the mysteries are the main element of each story, the book as a whole is very different from AC‘s other works that I‘ve read so far. The eponymous Mr. Quin is a mystery unto himself. He and Mr. Satterthwaite are a delightful duo. Loved them both and I highly recommend this book. The audiobook narrated by Hugh Fraser does not disappoint. 5/5⭐️

I am in love with Tommy and Tuppence. They‘re charming and funny and I wish Agatha Christie had written more than just five.

I think this is the first book in years I've got from the library and actually finished

It was a very fun book but I wasnt expecting the short story format.

It started off exciting and I couldnt stop turning pages but then it started getting samey.

My favourite was the haunted house

I'm about to start reading this book. I've only ever read Agatha Christies with Poirot before but I picked this up at the library

Clever short story collection. Second in the Tommy & Tuppence collection.
