One of my favorite books and so so appropriate that I am also reading a novel about the hardships of immigration. I love that Eve Bunting reminds readers that the first Thanksgiving happened because of unhappy immigrants.

As much as I appreciate this book, the author is not an immigrant herself, so I am reading this for fake diversity under 16 #BBRC @LibrarianRyan @Sarahreadstoomuch

LibrarianRyan 😁❤️👍🏻. I have lately been amazed at the fake diversity I find. 4y

Originally written in 1988, sadly remains relevant for refugees today. Written by an Irish immigrant, I think the ending is just a bit naive but overall an excellent introduction to children about the refugee experience. Great addition to the classroom library.

This HF picture book tells a story of a family coming to America by boat. The voyage to America was not easy by any means. The boat was having trouble and they were running out of food and water. By the time they reached America they find out it is a special day for America. #ucflae3414f19

Erinehart This would be a great book for a class read aloud during the month of November because it‘s based on Thanksgiving. A UDL strategy that I would use is 1.3 “offer alternatives for visual information” because I feel as though the student would be more engaged throughout the text. 5y
Erinehart The ESOL strategy that I feel would be of use during this read aloud is #14 “simplify your speech by making it slower and redundant. Doing this will allow the ELLs to break down the words and have a chance to understand the content. 5y

This website provides discussion questions for this book and could be a great resource when it comes to learning about Thanksgiving.
