Praise for Cassandra: '...a wonderful writer with a painterly eye for detail... There are some brilliant twists.' Wendy Holden, Daily Mail 'Fresh. Original. Spell-binding.' Jane Corry '...pulled me in from the first page and wouldn't let me go.' Heidi Perks 'Unexpectedly dark and dream-like. I loved the twists.' Natalie K. Martin 'A beautiful, rich, haunting and addictive masterpiece... I'll never forget it.' Louise Beech Five years ago, Susannah Harper's son Joel went missing without trace. Bereft of her son and then of her husband, Susannah tries to accept that she may never know for certain what has happened to her lost loved ones. She has rebuilt her life around a simple selfless mission: to help others who, like her, must learn to live without hope. But then, on the last night of Hull Fair, a fortune-teller makes an eerie prediction. She tells her that this Christmas Eve, Joel will finally come back to her. As her carefully-constructed life begins to unravel, Susannah is drawn into a world of psychics and charlatans, half-truths and hauntings, friendships and betrayals, forcing her to confront the buried truths of her family's past, where nothing and no one are quite as they seem. A ghostly winter read with a modern gothic flavour. A tale of twisted love, family secrets and hauntings.

The main character really frustrated & annoyed me but the plot was interesting, so it kept me reading. The ending didn't surprise me.

Wait, what?! What the hell did I just read? I was initially intrigued by the opening scene at Hull Fair but soon found this story worming it's way under my skin. And if it starts as one thing it ends up being - slowly, creepingly, inexorably - something else altogether. It is genuinely chilling & I could not have foreseen the twist - even as it was unravelling in front of my eyes I was incredulous. The writing of the MC is excellent ... cont. ⬇️⬇️

readingjedi ... the pacing is spot on. And the gobsmack of an ending left me reeling in an unshakeable state of WTF. I will be checking out this author's other work and not just because she a local gal. Recommended. 5y
Macnjen Wow, that's an amazing review, can't wait to read it and I don't even know the story!

readingjedi @Macnjen Thank you. It's one of those books that you think about long after you've finished it. As a mother it left me with so many conflicting emotions. And to me that's a sign of a really good book! 🙂 5y
CharismaRaven13 never heard of the book but it‘s on my TBR list now! Thank you! 5y

Really enjoying this book so far and I am especially loving moments like this - I've eaten at both these restaurants! The references to Hull just make it seem so real. David Mark is the only other author I've read who has set their novels in Hull ... I think, I'm sure there's probably more if I thought about it.

The cannelloni at Da Gianni was To Die For. So garlicky! Sadly closed now ... as I believe Lucca is too. Grrr, made myself hungry!

Started this one today. Another #Netgalley book that I can't remember anything about or what made me request it....

So I was quite delighted & excited to discover the author comes from, and still lives in, my neck of the woods! Being Hull/East Yorkshire. And the book opens with a scene set at the famous Hull Fair! Really hope the local flavour continues!

This is on my TBR list - it‘s about a mother whose son disappeared years ago who is then told by a fortune teller he will return to her during the coming Christmas! Looks a bit spooky and is set in Winter ! #jingleshelves #setinwinter ❄️❄️❄️

Christine11 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I think it sounds good too ! It was the only one I could think of - I must have more but it‘s hard to try and remember when everything is set ! 💜 6y

Christine11 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks So do I ! I think it‘s because I don‘t really read Christmas themed books even though I love Christmas! 😊 (edited) 6y
