New World Fairy Tales
New World Fairy Tales | Cassandra Parkin
13 posts | 6 read | 20 to read
In contemporary America, an un-named college student sets out on an obsessive journey of discovery to collect and record the life-stories of total strangers. The interviews that follow have echoes of another, far more famous literary journey, undertaken long ago and in another world. Drawing on the original, unexpurgated tales collected by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, six of their most famous works are re-imagined in the rich and endlessly varied landscapes of contemporary America. From the glass towers of Manhattan to the remoteness of the Blue Ridge mountains; from the swamps of Louisiana to the jaded glamour of Hollywood, New World Fairy Tales reclaims the fairy tale for the modern adult audience. A haunting blend of romance and realism, these stripped-back narratives of human experience are the perfect read for anyone who has read their child a bedtime fairy story, and wondered who ever said these were stories meant for children.

I don‘t know if this book is #underrated or not, but it definitely deserves a lot of love! Six realistic stories based on known fairy tales (although I can‘t figure out all of the tales they are based on). I read this some years ago, but I remember it as a great read with wonderful writing! 👌

A quick read with a clever concept bringing fairy tales into the modern day. You quickly recognise the fairy tale being retold in an interview recording style.

3 stars ⭐

Delightful and clever writing...but the form got old. These are modern retelling of fairy tales told in an interview style. I found that the form got old. 3.5 🌟

What do you do when you are in the middle of three books...start a fourth of course. Started this last night and loving it so far. I ordered it through my library but I may have to buy it in the end. I am loving the authors voice. #blameitonbooktube

This collection takes classic fairy #tales and retells them in a modern setting without too much magic. I spent a lot of time trying to guess which tales were being retold, but I have only guessed 4 out of 6. 😅

One of the #indiepresses I love is Salt. Their paperbacks are floppy and rubbery, they have some great authors, and they have published one of my favourite collection of fairy tale retellings (the tagged book) 📚

RealLifeReading Nice! I've not heard of them - or these books before and am intrigued by "rubbery" 7y
batsy I love the description floppy and rubbery! It sounds like the Dorothy Project books, which have a very nice feel. 7y
Kalalalatja @RealLifeReading @batsy they feel so great when you are holding them. 👌 and I haven't heard of the Dorothy Project books, but I have to take a look at them! 7y

A collection of six fairy tale retellings. Almost all are realistic stories. Amazingly well written

A poetry collection about women being in power and men are judged by the size of their wings

A novel about family and superstitions. It reads like a myth and it is wonderfully written

A play of a fictional meeting between Alice Liddell and Peter Llewelyn-Davies, the inspirations for Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan

rubyslippersreads I really want to read 7y
Kalalalatja @rubyslippersreads I liked it a lot! And it is a quick read too 👍 7y

The best part of this book was trying to guess the stories! That being said, Cassandra Parkin gave unique voices to all of the "interview" participants. Would definitely recommend for anyone who read the collections of the Brothers Grimm. #readathon #bookone

Kalalalatja @Moray_Reads if I had to pick just one, it would be Asking for it by Kate Harding. It has stucked with me in a way the others haven't, but I also loved the Liveship Traders and the Daughter of smoke and bone series 👍 8y

Boy, oh boy, this is good ❤ it retells six fairy tales set in the modern world. I expected it to be more magical, but every story is very realistic, and it works! Each story is set up as an interview, were an unnamed college student is doing a thesis about different people's lives. I had so much fun guessing which fairy tales the stories are based on, and would love to hear if any of you have read it, and what you think 👍
