When the Moon Comes
When the Moon Comes | Paul Harbridge
4 posts | 1 read | 5 to read
In this atmospheric story, a group of kids play hockey on a frozen lake by moonlight. At once nostalgic and timely, this is a gorgeous book that will speak to readers young and old. The beaver flood has finally frozen--perfect ice, without a bump or a ripple. For the kids in town, it's Christmas in November. They wait, impatiently, for the right moment. Finally, it arrives: the full moon. They huff and puff through logging trails, farms, back roads and tamarack swamps, the powdery snow soaking pant legs and boots, till they see it--their perfect ice, waiting. And the game is on. When the moon Comes is steeped in tradition and nostalgia: for hockey, for childhood, for a simpler time. The beauty of the text is matched by the brilliant, rich illustrations that wonderfully capture the magic of a moonlit night in winter.

The kids are waiting for the snow but once it finally falls Arthur makes them wait even longer. They have to wait for the perfect night and for the perfect moment. But why are they waiting? This is a great new winter story, of friends and adventure. This is a great story for RA. While IR, GR, SR, or PR could all also be utilized with this book. #UCFLAE3414

sboynt This is a great story to use in the winter time, especially with students in the south who haven‘t experienced snow in the winter. Since this is such a new book, I couldn‘t find any online activities other than some reviews and where to purchase the book. https://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/paul-harbridge/when-the-moon-comes/ 7y
sboynt An activity that could be included after a RA would be answering questions about the story through sentences or even pictures. UDL 4.1 along with ESOL 40 could be integrated within this kind of lesson.   7y
SadiqaH This book is similar to SNOW. I agree that these stories are great to read during winter time. 7y
Jeffersleighann I like how you stated that they could answer questions about this story in pictures! It takes a creative stance and I feel students might have more fun. 7y
DrSpalding As you know there are science/social studies standards regarding the weather and seasons. Genre? I made a text to text connection to the book The Snowy Day by Keats. 7y

Pickpick

It took a few readings before this 🇨🇦 #picturebook really grew on me. Right from the start, I loved the paintings by Matt James, and how I felt transported back to my own childhood, skating on the lake at our farm, but Harbridge‘s text seemed to lack something. Then I realized that it‘s about capturing a feeling, and it does that brilliantly: the magical feeling of being outdoors in icy weather while having a great time. All ages.

Tamra Evocative art! 7y
Cinfhen Gorgeous artwork 😍 7y

“We see ducks in the sky, flock after flock, sent south by the sudden cold.”

More ducks for @DuckOfDoom

DuckOfDoom I like the colours. It really is looking very cold. That reminds me of outside, in just a few days the temperature dropped really low here. It's not even winter yet 7y
Lindy @DuckOfDoom It‘s definitely winter here. I don‘t think it‘s been above freezing at any time this month. Sunset is at 4:39 pm. ☹️ 7y

“November is mild. The ducks stay late on the big beaver flood in the woods behind Brunton‘s farm.”
Matt James is the illustrator of this 🇨🇦 #picturebook, which happens to be a perfect match for this time of year. The mallard giving the other ducks the side eye makes me think of @DuckOfDoom .

DuckOfDoom This mallard is looking quite suspicious 👻🦆 7y
