Make Way for Ducklings | Robert McCloskey

Pickpick

Make Way for Ducklings by Robert McCloskey. Genre: F, Award: Caldecott Gold, TS: RA, RT, IR, DR. I think this would work best as a read aloud and can be paired with either science or just learning how to be kind to the environment by watching out for fellow inhabitants like animals. This book is about two ducks trying to find a place to start a family and talks about kindness from an animals perspective. #UCFLAE3414SP18

Jeffersleighann EL 10. Teach think, pair, share strategies in cooperative groups. They can use this to come up with ways to help animals, and share with their peers. UDL 2.5: Illustrate through multiple media. This book also talks about geography so i thought it would be cool to pair with a virtual field trip around Boston. 6y

Olivia by Ian Falconer. Genre: F, Awards: Caldecott silver, TS: RA, AS, IR, GR, PR. This book is about a pig named “Olivia,” who is creative and spunky. This could be linked to art since it talks about painting and singing. A good way to incorporate art through books in the classroom through a read aloud then an art project to follow like splatter painting. #UCFLAE3414SP18

Jeffersleighann EL 13. Use preview/review activities. UDL 1.3: Offer alternatives for visual information. Https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0taY9G-Nh-U 6y
KaitlynN The art is so so good! I also love the image you put up. I think Olivia is a good example for kids. She knows she is good a lots of things, but she still makes mistakes and runs into all kinds of situations. My cousin loved the show when she was little. I think a lot of kids would know Olivia from the cartoon too! 6y
Jeffersleighann @KaitlynN that‘s a good point! It shows kids it‘s okay to make mistakes and honestly I had no clue it was a cartoon until Spalding said something 😅 6y

Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers. Genre: F, Awards: Nestlé smarties book prize gold award, Blue Peter book of the year, TS: RA, S, PR. This book would make a great storytelling because it has the basic formation of a story, starting with “Once upon a Time,” and because of its organization. This book is about a boy and a penguin and the boys quest to find the penguins home. #UCFLAE3414SP18

The Incredible Book Eating Boy by Oliver Jeffers. Genre: F, Award: Boston Merit Award, TS: RA,S, AS, IR, GR, PR. This book is about a book eating boy that becomes smarter with the more books he eats. The View from Saturday by E.L. Konigsburg. Genre: RF, Award: Newbery Gold, Teaching Strategy: LC, IR. This book is amazing! It took me a few chapters to get into it but once I did I could not put it down. It‘s about 4 students who are all connected which you find out how throughout the book. This book hits some serious topics and is a GREAT read! #UCFLAE3414SP18

Jeffersleighann I think this would be a great literature circle book because the students would be able to bring their own background knowledge to the table to help others understand the book. This book also shines a light on divorce, bullying, remarriage, parents death, etc. This would be great book for students to come together as a community. EL 38. Assign short readings for homework. 6y

KaitlynN I really like the artwork you shared! For some reason I‘m drawn to it. Like I would put a giant print of this up in my house. I think the themes you mentioned might tie strong emotions to this artwork and I think those connections are interesting. When kids can articulate where they see topics and feeling reflected in art it proves they are thinking deeply about whatever the topic is! (edited) 6y

Jeffersleighann This book is about August Pullman, a normal kid with a very deformed face. This book is about his journey of starting 5th grade (he was previously home schooled). This book includes point of views from Auggies family and friends and is eye opening for educators, students and people overall. I learned a lot from this book and learned a lot about choosing kindness. 6y

A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L‘Engle, Genre: SF, Award: Newbery Medal Gold, Teaching Strategy: LC, IR. I think this would make a great literature circle book because it is a book that continues to hold attention even when it‘s confusing. I think this book is really relatable so students will be able to understand what the characters are going through and there are some great discussion points they can discuss in their circles. #UCFLAE3414SP18

Tell Me Again About the Night I Was Born by: Jamie Lee Curtis; Genre: RF; Teaching Strategy: RA, AS, IR, PR. I think this book could be used in a lot of ways in the classroom because I think this book gives a different perspective on someone who is adopted‘s birthday and provides insight into something many students wouldn‘t know normally. #UCFLAE3414SP18

Jeffersleighann This book is the cutest book! I bought it while on vacation in Georgia and started to tear up in the book store. This book is about a little girl (who is adopted) asking about the night she was born. This book shines light on the love that is involved in adoption and how special the process is. 6y

Jeffersleighann This book is about two animals surviving hard times together with each other‘s friendship.
