Lost Memory of Skin
Lost Memory of Skin | Russell Banks
5 posts | 5 read | 11 to read
The author of Continental Drift, Rule of the Bone and The Sweet Hereafter returns with a very original, riveting mystery about a young outcast, and a contemporary tale of guilt and redemption. The perfect convergence of writer and subject, Lost Memory of Skin probes the zeitgeist of a troubled society where zero tolerance has erased any hope of subtlety and compassion. Suspended in a modern-day version of limbo, the young man at the centre of Russell Banks's uncompromising and morally complex new novel must create a life for himself in the wake of incarceration. Known in his new identity only as the Kid, he is shackled to a GPS monitoring device and forbidden to go near where children might gather. He takes up residence under a south Florida causeway, in a makeshift encampment with other convicted sex offenders. Barely beyond childhood himself, the Kid, despite his crime, is in many ways an innocent. Enter the Professor, a university sociologist of enormous size and intellect who finds in the Kid the perfect subject for his research. But when the Professor's past resurfaces and threatens to destroy his carefully constructed world, the balance in the two men's relationship shifts. Banks has long been one of our most acute and insightful novelists. Lost Memory of Skin is a masterful work of fiction that unfolds in language both powerful and beautifully lyrical. From the Hardcover edition.

“He can‘t quite picture God except as a huge ball of light with an old man‘s deep voice like in the pickup truck ads on TV coming out of the ball of light dictating the way everything in Eden is supposed to work.“

@Cinfhen #top6reads
I‘ve read some good books so far, but not a lot of spectacular ones...except for these. Tagged book might make it to be a book club choice, it‘s that rich.

britt_brooke Love, love, love Sedaris! 5y
Cinfhen The Sedaris is on my TBR & I really liked the Kingsolver ♥️♥️♥️Great picks xx thanks for sharing 5y
Tex2Flo @britt_brooke @cinfhen outside of The Santaland Diaries, this has been my favorite Sedaris so far. It's sorta the way I deal with plants in the wild--a bit of theft by finding. 5y

1. Always been intrigued by the title along with the pic of the lizard. Long time on TBR and finally in the house.
2. Nope, not my bag. Just another day.
3. Least—mustard yellow-orange
4. Robert Samuel, after my father and his father—Bobby Three Sticks (a nod to current read City of Fire)

Pickpick

#Recommendsday The Lost Memory of Skin is a book I read a couple of years ago. It has stuck with me. It follows the actions and aftermath of those actions faced by the main character, The Kid. He is a young man from a challenged background who makes a mistake and has to live with the consequences. The book explores his very limited options and forces the reader to question how little our society offers for the unfortunate and for rehabilitation.
