Chris Brookmyre‘s standalone novel is a clever mix of SF and hard boiled noir with a setting akin to the Western frontier and strong pacing. The world building is great, bringing in tech, politics, economics and social commentary and I liked the different factions at play with their respective agendas but Freeman and Blake felt a bit stock at times and some of the emotional revelations in the final quarter weren‘t earned.
Hope the week has started well for everyone. I had some Monday luck, picking up this bargain on the way home.
Brookmyre is one of my favourite authors, and this book has been on my wish list for a while. Looking forward to getting stuck in!
I‘ve been working a LOT of overtime but still reading when I can! Here‘s some #currentreads
Backwards book is my May #readersgonnaread and I‘m not actually reading the monstrous physical copy of 11/22/63 but listening to the audio from the library. I‘ve wanted to re-read it for a while!
Background scenery = mystery tree thing off the back porch. It blooms for like 2 weeks only in the spring and I don‘t know what it is!!??
Took a while to get into, really enjoyed the middle and then a predictable ending. All in all I‘m glad I read it but as I find with a lot of books, the ending disappoints.
It's not perfect, there was a major plot point which I guessed early and so fell flat when it arrived. It's written in present tense, which I found very jarring in places.
But I was sucked into the story nonetheless, mainly because he created two interesting female characters with strong arc's. It ramped up to a very successful ending. This would be a good one for Richard Morgan sci fi fans.
Really enjoyed this book. So many big questions tackled, a well-thought-out world, and an opening chapter that is so quintessential Brookmyre that I laughed out loud and applauded 😂
How many of these library books will I read in March? How many will need to be strategically renewed...?
@rabbitprincess I hope Brookmyre writes more sci-fi! 3y
