Last Enemy by Richard Hillary: A World War Two Memoir by a Spitfire Pilot
Last Enemy by Richard Hillary: A World War Two Memoir by a Spitfire Pilot | Richard Hillary
2 posts | 4 read | 2 to read
One of the great memoirs of World War Two, Zephyr House is please to republish this classic work, written by a spitfire pilot who fought in the Battle of Britain. With a life both harrowing and tragic, Hillary has long been remembered as a great pilot and an even greater memoirist. This is a must read for any serious World War Two/Battle of Britain student.

Written by a 21 year old pilot as he recovered from burns he received when shot down during the Battle of Britain. Less a combat narrative than philosophical examination of why he continues to fight when friends and colleagues die around him. A selfish man coming to see the need to fight for a greater good based upon the sacrifices of those around him. Hillary would ultimately not survive the war.

LeahBergen I have a Slightly Foxed edition of this waiting on my shelves. 2y

The Last Enemy | Richard Hillary

Tuesday evening whilst waiting for my book club to show up, I sipped on a London Fog & started the Foxed Edition, No. 39.

From what I‘ve read so far, it‘s hard to believe Hillary was only 21 years old when he wrote this memoir. Sadly, this is the only book he wrote in his lifetime. Within nine months of its publication both Hillary & his co-pilot were killed when their plane crashed. Hillary was 23 years old.
