The last week or so, there‘s been a slight shift, autumn is coming to a close & we‘re slipping into the dark of winter. Although most of the leaves have lost their vibrant hues & fallen from the trees, & the natural world is preparing for a long winter nap, I‘m not quite ready to let go of this beautiful & bountiful season. So for a final autumn hurrah, I‘m reading this book. I‘ve heard it‘s delightful, magical & the perfect autumn read.

mabell Great photo! I‘m still in fall 🍂🍁, but leaning towards winter/Christmas ❄️🎄 16h

Sometimes a Monday calls for an afternoon hot chocolate with EXTRA large marshmallows! The child in me, was thrilled when I remembered I had some leftover s‘mores marshmallows in the cupboard. They‘re so large, only two would fit in the largest mug I own. In this case, a simple pleasure seems to be a bit bigger than usual, today. ☺️

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Looks yummy!!! 2d

Shirley, by Charlotte Bronte | Emily Bront, Charlotte Bront, Anne Bront
post image

It was a bit of a slow start with this book, but once the title character enters the scene it‘s been an absolute treat. Jane Eyre will always be my favourite of Charlotte‘s work, but Shirley is quickly becoming a firm favourite. I love spirited & intelligent heroines, & Shirley is the very definition of this. If you haven‘t read this one, I highly recommend it. I‘ve even laughed out loud at a couple of parts, always a sign of a good book.

batsy I put this off for a long time until some of us did a buddy read on Litsy and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I mean, it's Charlotte after all but still, it was a nice surprise ❤️ 2d
catebutler @batsy I definitely think reading this as a group was the nudge I needed too. I honestly haven‘t heard that much about her lesser known works, so this one was never at the top of my list to get to. It‘s interesting though, I just found out, several historical figures praised this book, including Vincent Van Gogh. Interesting indeed! 2d
batsy @catebutler I love Van Gogh, and it's so cool to learn that he liked this too! Thanks for that 🙂 2d

It‘s hard to believe November is nearing the half way mark! 🧣🍂I‘ve been preoccupied with work and projects - attempting to get tasks and to do‘s completed before the onset of the holidays. My reading has taken a bit of a hit this month, because of this, but I‘ve been slowly working my way through the books pictured, when I do have a spare moment. (cont. in comments)

catebutler I also FINALLY got off my #winterpackage for #LitsyLove. I love this group, and want all who have written recently to know, I received your lovely letters and will reply back soon. Don‘t you imagine the leaves dream now
how comfortable it will be to touch
the earth instead of the
nothingness of the air and the endless
freshets of wind? And don‘t you think
the trees, especially those with
mossy hollows, are beginning to look for
the birds that will come—six, a dozen—to sleep
inside their bodies? And don‘t you hear
the goldenrod whispering goodbye,
the everlasting being crowned with the first
tuffets of snow?

(cont. below)

catebutler The pond
stiffens and the white field over which
the fox runs so quickly brings out
its long blue shadows. The wind wags
its many tails. And in the evening
the piled firewood shifts a little,
longing to be on its way.

“Come to the book as you would come to an unexplored land. Come without a map. Explore it and draw your own map.” —Stephen King, Hearts in Atlantis

I‘m breaking in my new autumn mug with a favourite herbal tea, Winter Spice by Twinings. It‘s a comforting blend of apple, chamomile, cinnamon, cardamom and cloves - perfect for a crisp autumn day. I‘m making my way through Joyce Carol Oates, ‘The Accursed‘ for my IRL book club next week. Set during the turn of the twentieth century in Princeton, New Jersey. Strange things begin to happen...vampires, ghosts & a powerful curse befall the residents of a normally genteel town. I‘m also loving the real life characters crossing in & out of this twisted & complex novel: Grover Cleveland, Woodrow Wilson, Jack London & Upton Sinclair, to name a few.

I‘ve been down with strep for almost two weeks now, so I‘ve been MIA, and out of the loop!! Today, I think the antibiotics finally kicked in, and even though I‘m not fully recovered, I‘m on the mend, thank heavens! For me, one of the most attractive aspects of the #boxwallabook box, is not knowing much about the authors or books included. I‘m introduced to authors & books I may not stumble upon here on Litsy or in a bookstore, etc. They move me, push me as a reader, explore themes & ideas that are heartbreaking, & beautiful & always leave me wanting more. Also, I love how each book takes me on a worldwide adventure - somewhere exotic, foreign & romantic.

slategreyskies I‘ve never heard of this book box. I‘ll check it out. It looks interesting. :) 7d

It‘s nearing the end of the month (can you believe it), & I‘ve been working on a fun & spooky TBR for next month. ‘The Last Seance‘ is a collection of twenty stories, some featuring Christie‘s two famous sleuths - Hercule Poirot & Miss Marple. Pickpick

This is my 3rd Fitzgerald novel, & I think my favorite yet. One of the things I love the most about her writing, is how unpredictable her stories & characters are. I‘d compare Fitzgerald‘s writing style to Muriel Spark. Each, brilliantly pack a punch in their short, intelligent & hilarious books. Like all of her books, the reader quickly becomes attached to her unique characters, & moved along w/ a charming wit & intelligence w/ each page turned.

I must admit this is not an easy read, it‘s disjointed, acutely raw & difficult to say the least. Even if I re-read several times, I‘d still be grasping for comprehension. But, something in me craves this type of literature. It‘s meaty, full of body, stretches me as a reader, takes me out of my comfort zone, & ultimately pushes me towards awareness. This book although not rateable for me at the moment, will be staying with me for quite some time.

The Besieged City | Clarice Lispector
post image
Pickpick

This beautiful book was part of @theboxwalla‘s June Book Box. Each title is hand-picked & I haven‘t read one that hasn‘t moved me, or shaped me as a reader. I admire authors who challenge the literary norm, & I think I‘ve fallen head over heels in love with Lispector and her writing. I have a feeling I‘ll be chewing over this book and her words for quite some time.

(cont. in comments)

catebutler In a letter, Lispector anguishes about writing this novel, and states, “I‘m struggling with the book, which is horrible...I don‘t know how to forgive the thoughtlessness of writing. But I‘ve already based myself entirely on writing and if that desires goes, there won‘t be anything left. So that‘s the way it has to be. But I‘ve reached the conclusion that writing is what I want more than anything else in the world, even more than love”.

Summer: A Novel | Edith Wharton

Pickpick

Read for my #SeasonsByTheBook club. Overall, ‘Summer‘ is a ‘coming of age‘ story. Charity matures from a naive, romantic, & inexperienced girl to a young adult who has learned difficult lessons & made realistic choices – all in the space of a few weeks. She has rebelled against her guardian, fallen in love, become sexually active, experienced emotional betrayal, & faced her problematic origins, before making a choice which will affect her future.

And now, I‘m looking forward to a lazy Sunday with lots of reading.

Pickpick

I‘ve been working on my knitting skills, & this book about a knitting shop, & first time knitters was a delight to read. I loved everything from the adorable knitting shop called, ‘A Good Yarn‘, to the dynamics between the four main characters & each of their stories. Macomber, I‘m finding has that lovely, feel good, cozy vibe that seeps into each page of the book. Perfect when life‘s a bit chaotic & you need to destress & unwind. 📖🧶

My final #BookMarkSwap package came from the adorable @LeslieO , thank you Leslie! I love each item you sent. I‘m actually getting ready to do a re-read of P&P this month, so the sticky tags are perfect & the cherry blossom & bee 🐝 bookmark is particularly gorgeous! Did you make the beaded bookmark? Your generosity astounds me, thank you! (3/3)

And thank you so much to the fabulous @LibrarianRyan for hosting this swap, you‘re wonderful, Ryan. xx

Determined to be more present & accountable on Litsy this week for #BFCR3. Made it to the gym this afternoon, and hit a lull in the crowd! 🎉 I was able to almost finish the pictured book. So, post gym, I‘m finishing the last few chapters & eating one of my favourite post workout snacks: high fiber whole wheat toast, peanut butter, banana, honey & a sprinkling of chia seeds. My favourite type of weekend includes a busy and full Saturday, and then a slow and relaxing Sunday. This weekend met both of these requirements. I just realized I forgot to post my goals for this round! 🙈 So, see above in this first check-in post (great way to start, I know 🙄). I have several recipes I‘ve tagged in this wonderful cookbook. Today, I‘ve been busy mixing, stirring, baking & rotating two trays of homemade maple cinnamon granola (whilst listening to my new audiobook, the second Maisie Dobbs, ‘Birds of a Feather‘). My house smells AMAZING!! After five rounds of rotation baking, the dried cranberries have been added, mixed throughly & is now cooling. I can‘t wait to use this with my morning yoghurt & fruit.

AlaMich Sounds delicious but rather labor-intensive. 😊 4mo
catebutler @AlaMich I was kind of unsure at first, ha! 😅 But, it actually wasn‘t too bad. I made a little mark on the parchment paper and it was super easy to remember the rotation. And now I have homemade granola without all the added preservatives and junk. And I love how good it smells too. ☺️ 4mo

This weekend I‘m working my way through the stack of books in my last post. I just finished a digital library hold on my Kindle and after using a randomiser app (anyone else use one to pick their next read), #4 on the list was, ‘The Solitary Summer‘. I recently finished, ‘Elizabeth and Her German Garden‘, and loved it. Self-deprecating wit, humour, gardening and a journal format make for a delightful read and perfect for a summer afternoon.

It may be a bit ambitious, but these are the books I‘m planning on finishing before the end of the month. I can already mark off the bottom book — I finished it via audio whilst making dinner and tidying up last night. Two of the titles I haven‘t started, but with a quiet weekend ahead and a week before the start of the new month, I think I can manage it, or at the very least carry over just one or two next month, progress indeed!

Whew! I‘m down to an hour to go for #24in48. Yesterday I cruised through the hours, today it‘s been a bit slower. But, I‘ll make the 24 hour goal this round! 🙌🏼 I‘ve finished 4 books (2 physical, 2 audio) & now I need light & frivolous. I‘m not that big of a romance reader, but I ADORE Julia Quinn. Her books have made me laugh out loud, they‘re intelligent, fun & have great characters - she‘s described as the modern Jane Austen, I‘d agree.

West with the Night | Beryl Markham

I love a good memoir, especially if it is full of adventure & about women with gumption. I‘ve been absorbed in this book & Beryl‘s life as an aviatrix, horse trainer & elephant scout during the early 20th century in Kenya. The introduction mentioned this memoir is madly selective & slightly embellished, but like any great story or storyteller, sometimes the telling is what makes it extra special & Beryl definitely has a way with words & emotions.

catebutler @TheAromaofBooks Me too! Seriously, this woman led an amazing life! I‘ve always loved the idea of living or visiting during the turn of the early 20th century. So many adventures, especially in archaeology and travel! 🦴🧳🧭 4mo
