Not So Different: What You Really Want to Ask About Having a Disability | Shane Burcaw
14 posts | 7 read | 4 to read
Not So Different offers a humorous, relatable, and refreshingly honest glimpse into Shane Burcaws life tackles many of the mundane and quirky questions that hes often asked about living with a disability, and shows readers that hes just as approachable, friendly, and funny as anyone else. Shane Burcaw was born with a rare disease called spinal muscular atrophy, which hinders his muscles growth. As a result, his body hasnt grown bigger and stronger as hes gotten olderits gotten smaller and weaker instead. This hasnt stopped him from doing the things he enjoys (like eating pizza and playing sports and video games) with the people he loves, but it does mean that he routinely relies on his friends and family for help with everything from brushing his teeth to rolling over in bed.

This nonfiction book was so amazing to me! I think it would be perfect to have in any classroom library. The picture book answers the questions young children ask Shane Burcaw about his wheelchair and life with Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

Shane makes great use of humorous narrative and images to open a dialogue with kids about living with spinal muscular atrophy. He points out ways he‘s just like anyone else, and explains some of the things he does to adapt to his body‘s needs. I thought this was a really well done book. Shane knows his audience well! #DisabilitiesRep #PictureBook

Not the tagged book. This poem was selected as the best in a competition organised by the Football Premier League, hence the reference to cheering for the teams.

I‘ve read this story to my kids several times since we checked it out from the library and it‘s fantastic.

Burcaw talks about being differently abled candidly and with humor, showing us his differences and similarities to able bodied people. Highly recommended to grade schoolers and their adults.

Tamra My library only has his older audience chapter book. 😑 I‘ll have to keep my eyes peeled for this one. (edited) 7y
[DELETED] 3803335244 My oldest son was asked about his “disability” because he is autistic. He said he didn‘t have disabilities, that he only has abilities, so don‘t dis-his-abilities. I loved that! I guess his former boyscott leader told him that. And I love that ❤️ 7y
