The Reckoning: Children's House | Yrsa Sigurdardottir

Yrsa Sigurdardottir, winner of the 2015 Petrona Award for best Scandinavian Crime Novel, delivers another tour de force in her second novel in the Children's House series. In 2016 the following people are going to die: K, S, BT, JJ, OV and I. Nobody will miss them. Least of all me. I can't wait. The chilling message is found in a school's time capsule, ten years after it was buried. But surely, if a thirteen-year-old wrote it, it can't be a real threat... Huldar suspects he's been giving the investigation simply to keep him away from real police work. He turns to psychologist Freyja to help understand the child who hid the note. Soon, however, they find themselves at the heart of another shocking case... For the discovery of the letter coincides with a string of macabre events: body parts found in a garden, followed by the murder of the man who owned the house. His initials are BT... and now time is running out to identify the writer, the victims and the killer, before further deaths come.

Big thumbs up to this, the second in the Huldar and Freya series. If you haven‘t read any & you enjoy dark, literary thrillers, you‘re missing out. The series is set in Iceland, & the characters are unique and genuine. This installment is quite dark indeed though, & involves violence against children, just a warning. But what a unique mystery series, & so well written. It was my #BookSpin, & my eighth book read so far this month. Not too shabby!

Dark, gritty crime novels are just what I need sometimes and this book delivered beautifully in that department.

I didn't realize this was the second in a series, but it still worked as a stand alone. Missing kids, a determined detective, a dedicated child psychologist, and a sadistic killer all create nail-biting suspense in this book that will keep you guessing.

Now I can mark off #Iceland for #ReadingEurope2020. @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

Mehso-so

Hulder really needs to quit drinking. He makes terrible relationship decisions drunk. The whole story is dark and depressing. The power some people have, when you don‘t believe the kids, when the kids can‘t trust the system to protect them. It‘s sad.

Finished this book last night. I do like Freya and Huldar is growing on me. I liked the story overall even if the subject was a bit disturbing. Freya and Huldar will eventually make a great team - once they learn how to talk to each other!
