The Summer I Met Jack
The Summer I Met Jack: A Novel | Michelle Gable
16 posts | 14 read | 14 to read
New York Times bestselling author imagines the affair between John F. Kennedy and Alicia Corning Clark - and the child they may have had. Based on a real story - in 1950, a young, beautiful Polish refugee arrives in Hyannisport, Massachusetts to work as a maid for one of the wealthiest families in America. Alicia is at once dazzled by the large and charismatic family, in particular the oldest son, a rising politician named Jack. Alicia and Jack are soon engaged, but his domineering father forbids the marriage. And so, Alicia trades Hyannisport for Hollywood, and eventually Rome. She dates famous actors and athletes and royalty, including Gary Cooper, Kirk Douglas, and Katharine Hepburn, all the while staying close with Jack. A decade after they meet, on the eve of Jacks inauguration as the thirty-fifth President of the United States, the two must confront what they mean to each other. The Summer I Met Jack by Michelle Gable is based on the fascinating real life of Alicia Corning Clark, a woman who J. Edgar Hoover insisted was paid by the Kennedys to keep quiet, not only about her romance with Jack Kennedy, but also a baby they may have had together.

Mehso-so

So I spent the whole book thinking the protagonist was made up and discovered in the author‘s note that she was a real person who tabloids linked to JFK. The knowledge that it had some basis in reality redeemed the book somewhat for me but overall I found the character to be completely vague and not well developed. But fun summery socialite scandals are kind of my jam so this was good to get me out of a rut. #weekendreads

I have had a fascination with the Kennedy‘s lately (pretty much began after reading 11/22/63), and have read quite a bit of nonfiction about JFK and Jackie. I especially liked Secret Service agent Clint Hill‘s books. I thought a fictionalized story like this would be a fun change, but nothing really drew me in. I couldn‘t find anything to like about Alicia, and found myself waiting for times she was with Jack, only to be disappointed again. BAIL

Lindy This month, my sister started teaching in a one-room Hutterite school. She says the kids are great. 5y
ReadingEnvy @Lindy oh great! In all the Hutterite books I've read, often the only "outsiders" the children see regularly are the teachers. 5y
Lindy @ReadingEnvy It‘s a new colony, so there are only 12 children, ranging from Garde 1 to 12. 5y
ReadingEnvy @Lindy still growing then? One of the books talked about the formula and process for starting a new community... They definitely have a sense of how many people can be sustained communally. 5y

Heard the author talk about this book today. It doesn‘t sound like my cup of tea, but I enjoyed the talk. Some of her other books look interesting!

Amiable Which school is this that has had so many females who have graduated and become authors? Sounds like an amazing place! 6y
Susanita @Amiable William & Mary. It is an amazing place! I was there over the weekend for a women‘s conference to kick off celebrating 100 years of coeducation. 6y
Amiable I love that campus! It's so pretty, too. Sounds like it was a great conference! 6y

Fascinating read!!! The amount of research that went into this book is STUNNING! And yet it‘s as delicious as an entertainment mag. I have never read JFK like this. Or any of the other celebrities! Highly recommend. Equally suited for beach and book club.

A must-read for all! I had no idea that it was a story about THE Kennedys and was floored when it finally dawned on me. I then, of course, was even more intrigued and could not stop reading! It flows like a story of fiction, though it is full of facts and history. Lots of famous name-dropping with true and fictional details that left me wondering which parts were embellished. This should be made into a movie!

Hooked_on_books It‘s so cool that you‘re promoting other women authors. We all need to support each other if we‘re going to achieve equality, so this is wonderful! 6y
