Transforming: The Bible and the Lives of Transgender Christians
Transforming: The Bible and the Lives of Transgender Christians | Austen Hartke
8 posts | 4 read | 4 to read
In 2014, Time magazine announced that America had reached "the transgender tipping point," suggesting that transgender issues would become the next civil rights frontier. Years later, many people--even many LGBTQ allies--still lack understanding of gender identity and the transgender experience. Into this void, Austen Hartke offers a biblically based, educational, and affirming resource to shed light and wisdom on this modern gender landscape. Transforming: The Bible and the Lives of Transgender Christians provides access into an underrepresented and misunderstood community and will change the way readers think about transgender people, faith, and the future of Christianity. By introducing transgender issues and language and providing stories of both biblical characters and real-life narratives from transgender Christians living today, Hartke helps readers visualize a more inclusive Christianity, equipping them with the confidence and tools to change both the church and the world.

Here‘s my March #BookSpinBingo wrap up. Tagged book was my last read. I listened to the audio, but if this title is just now coming on your radar, you should know there was an updated and revised edition with a study guide that was just published in March you should check out. I really loved Austen‘s warm narrative style. Now that I am finally caught up on wrap ups I am really going to try to get a bingo for April. Last one was in December 🫣

It's #TransAwarenessWeek! You can support trans and nonbinary authors this week and all year round, AND support indie bookstores, by buying books from this list I've created on Bookshop. Fiction, nonfiction, middle grade, YA, memoir, general fiction, sci-fi, poetry - there's something for everyone! I'm always adding to it. 💕 https://bookshop.org/lists/trans-and-nonbinary-authors

I‘m so glad my library lets us do this. This is the 5th item my library has bought this year based on my suggestions. ❤️📚

JacqMac I love this service, too. I have lost count, but it‘s very exciting when they buy what I request. 6y

Hartke has an easy, conversational style whether he's closely inspecting Scripture or sharing personal stories. He includes the experiences of other trans/nb Christians, giving the book an intersectional lens. This book is honest about ways the church has failed trans/nb folx and challenges they face. But Hartke's infectious optimism combined with plenty of positive experiences shared give the book a hopeful, share the good news! tone throughout.
