Long May She Reign
Long May She Reign | Ellen Emerson White
6 posts | 5 read | 1 reading | 5 to read
Meg Powers is the daughter of the President of the United States. She's about to enter her first year of college. She's living through the worst year of her life. Last June Meg was kidnapped by terrorists – brutalized, starved, and left for dead. She was shackled in a deserted mine shaft and had to smash the bones in her own hand to escape. Meg Powers survived the unthinkable, the stuff of nightmares. Her terrorist captor is still at large. But still she must live each day. Ahead of her is the grueling physical therapy to heal her broken body; the challenge of leaving the safety of the White House for her freshman year at college. But harder still than the physical and social challenges ahead are her shattered sense of herself and her family. Will she ever forgive her mother, the President, for her "can not, have not and will not negotiate with terrorists" stance – even when it came to her own daughter? And more difficult still, can Meg forgive herself for having the strength, the intelligence and the wit to survive? In a brilliant novel, Ellen Emerson White tells her most ambitious and intense story about a most unlikely but deeply affecting heroine.

Once again, White tapped into the complexities of Meg's feelings and doubts. This time, Meg is still recovering from the physical and mental trauma of being kidnapped and brutalized as well as the difficulties of starting college. All this and being the President's Daughter. I hope White expands on this series bc I would love to see how Meg and her family fares. If there is a next one, I hope it starts a few years after this. Maybe reelection time

For today's #photoadaynov16: #disabilities I choose this book. While my life is significantly different than this Meg's life (for example, my mom ISN'T the US president), this book probably comes closest to showing what my experience of quickly becoming disabled at a relatively young age is like. The author truly gets at the emotional realities & frustrations common to many who find themselves suddenly facing the issues of living with a disability

GlitteryOtters This is the 4th book in the series, though, & I recommend starting with the 1st one (tagged below). 8y

For #photoadaynov16: some of my favorite (YA) #politicalfiction. I just finished my presidential election period re-read of this series and, MAN, are they good. I just finished re-reading the final book, Long May She Reign, yesterday morning. 5+ out of 5 stars. I will talk about this more in a couple days (saving further discussion for another prompt coming up in a couple of days), but let me just say, WOW. It gets better, I think, w/each re-read.

I always #reread this series in the months leading up to a Presidential election. This year is no exception (currently on Long Live the Queen, hoping to finish all rereads before the election). This is probably my all time favorite series of books. #booktober

LiteraryinPA I'd never heard of it! Thanks for the recommendation! 8y
GlitteryOtters @LiteraryinLititz it is so good! They are stacked in reverse order...read the bottom book first and work your way up. Ellen is my favorite living author. She publishes slowly and infrequently now, but everything she writes is worth reading. 💕 8y
