It is a sweet story but feels like a squeaky clean version of a very dirty time.
Nice quick book. Part of me wanted more but sometimes it‘s okay to want more.
Lizzie and Karl's mother is a zoo keeper; the family has become attached to an orphaned elephant named Marlene, who will be killed as a precautionary measure so she and the other animals don't run wild should the zoo be hit by bombs. The family persuades the zoo director to let Marlene stay in their garden instead. When the city is bombed, the family flees, but how can they walk the same route when they have an elephant, and keep themselves safe?
Part 4 Ring of bells. All I can say is this book was amazing. It was heartwarming and worth the moment it took to complete this book. The story was wonderful and I could not contain my tears. It was so well written. Absolutely amazing. #Summersendreadathon
"What is done is done. The past is behind us." What an amazing think if we could all live living up to these words. And forgive those that have harmed us with no remorse. #Summersendreadathon
Part 3 Ring of steel. Omg what an intense section of the book. The plot has definitely thicken at this point. #Summersendreadathon
"How wicked is that, to love someone who should be my enemy?" #Summersendreadathon
"Sooner or later we all run out of tomorrows." #Summersendreadathon
"To be a true friend, you have to be a good listener." #Summersendreadathon
Starting my day off to reading Part 3. Hoping to finish this book today. So far it is captured my attention and has made me realize just how hurt a person can feel when they've lost everything that has ever been normal to them due to war. #Summersendreadathon
Part two ring of fire. Was definitely the peak of what is to come. This book is getting deeper and deeper to the climax of the story. What happened to the family in the farm? #Summersendreadathon
Just finished Part 1 Ring of Truth, wow is all I can say. The intensity of a family who is in limbo of the unknown of war is intense. #Summersendreadathon
This book is definitely one I am enjoying. Just started but it has me intrigued. #Summersendreadathon #Anelephanyltinthegarden #michaelmorpurgo
Inspired by a True Story! This is such a nice story with such a great premise. The idea of hiding an elephant while surrounded by enemies creates a great conflict.
“I think I have always had a strong sense of Justice, of fair play, of what is right and what is wrong.”
This is an adorable story on how a family stayed strong together and took care of a cute elephant. This would be a book I would share with my students in my classroom.
An elephant in the garden by Michael Morpurgo is a historical fiction book that was published in 2009. Lizzie‘s mother had taken a job as a zoo keeper after her father had went off fighting in World War II. Her and her family had became attached to an orphaned elephant named Marlene. There was bombing coming to Dresden and all the animals were called to be destroyed. The mother asked to take the elephant back home to stay in the garden.
This book is a good example of the obstacles life can bring when you least expect it. Lizzie and Karl have to travel in the middle of winter with Marlene, a young elephant from their zoo, because their home was bombed. Trying to save their lives and keep Marlene safe while possibly approaching enemies. Genre: Historical Fiction; Published: 2010
“That was how the war began for us, the beginning of our nightmare, of everyone‘s nightmare.”
This quote is powerful because it‘s located towards the start of the book and you aren‘t sure what‘s going to take place, but you know it‘s serious and that these characters are going to face hardships.
Published in 2010, this story includes authentic information about the Dresden bombings and how it affects one family in this historical fiction story that includes an elephant that they must protect. The author provides a note at the back of the book in which discusses where the idea of the novel came from and it is in fact coming from a true story!!
"I looked up into Marlene's face, and saw the fires of the city burning in her troubled eye. She knew what was happening, understood everything. I was sure of it." (p. 75)
