The Hunting Accident
The Hunting Accident: A True Story of Crime and Poetry | David L. Carlson
4 posts | 6 read | 1 to read
It was a hunting accident—that much Charlie is sure of. That's how his father, Matt Rizzo—a gentle intellectual who writes epic poems in Braille—had lost his vision. It’s not until Charlie’s troubled teenage years, when he’s facing time for his petty crimes, that he learns the truth. Matt Rizzo was blinded by a shotgun blast to the face—but it was while participating in an armed robbery. Newly blind and without hope, Matt began his bleak new life at Stateville Prison. But in this unlikely place, Matt's life and very soul were saved by one of America's most notorious killers: Nathan Leopold Jr., of the infamous Leopold and Loeb. From David Carlson and Landis Blair comes the unbelievable true story of a father, a son, and remarkable journey from despair to enlightenment.

When Charlie Rizzo's mother died, he is sent to Chicago to live with his blind father. As he grows up, he gets in trouble with the law. His father opens up about his own experience in prison with Nathan Leopold. Dante plays heavily in his father's prison life and that exploration is fascinating. Excellent graphic non-fiction about the power of the arts, friendship, and the danger of losing your way.

aquariusnat Your review implies you really liked it. But chose Bail , why ? 7y

A father tells his delinquent son the true story of being blinded and his time in prison. This is true crime, graphic non-fiction, and Dante‘s Inferno all rolled together. Full review at http://booknaround.blogspot.com/2018/03/review-hunting-accident-by-david-l.html **Note others LOVE this so take my feelings with a grain of salt.

The art style actually reminded me of one of my favorite graphic novels from last year, My Favorite Thing Is Monsters, in that they both use a lot of cross hatching. Though I sometimes got bogged down in the literary analysis sections, there were a couple lovely emotional payoffs towards the end that I really enjoyed.
