Beneath a Ruthless Sun
Beneath a Ruthless Sun | Gilbert King
From the author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning bestseller Devil in the Grove, a gripping story of sex, race, class, corruption, and the arc of justice twisted and bent straight again in the Florida citrus groves. In January 1957, which brings a rare killing freeze to Florida's orange groves, Blanche Bosanquet Knowles, the wealthy young wife of a citrus baron, is raped in her home while her husband is away. She says a "husky Negro" did it, and Lake County's infamously racist sheriff, Willis McCall, has no hesitation in rounding up a herd of suspects matching that description, alibis be damned. But within days they are released, and instead the crime is pinned on Jesse Daniels, a slight white nineteen-year-old with the mental capacity of a six-year-old. His uneducated parents' every attempt to secure him competent legal representation fails, and he is packed up north to the Florida State Hospital for the Insane in Chattahoochee, where he will languish for more than thirteen years. But facts are stubborn things, especially in the hands of a crusading journalist named Mabel Norris Reese, a heroine of Devil in the Grove. She recruits to the cause an inexperienced young lawyer named Richard Graham, who learns quickly from his fearless mentor. Together they dig deep into the case, winning unlikely allies, unearthing the shameful truths buried beneath its confounding contradictions, and slowly, relentlessly, bending the arc of history at long last back toward justice. Powerful, page-turning, and rippling with the tensions that still fracture our own times, Beneath a Ruthless Sun will be devoured by Gilbert King's many fans and will win him many, many new ones.

Pickpick

An interesting & disturbing look at a case from Jim Crow Florida. King discusses the roles of race, economic status, & corruption in carrying out justice. With the George Floyd murder trial beginning, it feels timely. A necessary reminder of how so little has changed in America.
A little wordy & the author includes so much information about every player, major or minor, that it feels like you need a flow chart. Nonetheless, I recommend it.

Started this book and spotted this tree on my #audiowalk today. Early blooms and blue skies for those who might be feeling sad about winter.

Kaye Gosh that looks good ! So pretty. 6y
Gezemice Oh no, all I can think of that the poor thing will freeze... 6y
valeriegeary @Gezemice I think it'll be okay. I'm not sure exactly what kind of tree it is but we get a few early bloomers in the Pacific NW that do just fine with cooler temps. We're, thankfully, not in the of that menacing polar vortex. 😌 6y

This is one of those books where truth in unfortunately stranger (and more horrifying) than fiction. King digs in to yet another case of justice lost in the name of race and prejudice. At times when listening to this, I got a little lost - but by the end I realized that the story was so twisted that it took some persistence to sort out all the threads of injustice.

A powerful page Turner about Florida during the 1950's to the end of the 1970's. Involving race, a lot of violence from the local sheriff, and justice finally for a gentle mentally impaired man.

Starting this True Crime. Sounds interesting. About a mentally impaired 19 year old that gets sent to a state hospital without a trial.

The detail in this #truecrime work is incredible!! This is the true story of a mentally disabled man who was accused of a crime he didn‘t commit. Race and injustice are the big themes explored here. A journalist covering the story at the time (1950s-70s) is also featured prominently. Scary that these events actually transpired. Everyone should read this. The #audiobook was very well done as well. Recommended 🌟

I‘m surprised there‘s not more about this book on Litsy or anywhere else. The horrible story is new to me, but seems to be one of the many true tales of racism and injustice in the south. #audiobook #libby #nonfiction #truecrime
On a bright note, check out my lovely lily of the valley ♥️ (that I mistakenly called forget-me-nots 🙄)

BookNAround Do you call those forget-me-nots? I call them lily of the valley. 7y
Chelsea.Poole @BookNAround my grandmother calls them that, so I do! I just googled both and you‘re so right..these are lily of the valley. Maybe I‘ll edit my post 🤔 7y
