Sam and Ilsa's Last Hurrah
Sam and Ilsa's Last Hurrah | David Levithan, Rachel Cohn
7 posts | 10 read | 2 to read
Sam and Ilsa Kehlmann have spent most of their high school years throwing dinner parties, and now they’ve prepared their final blowout, just before graduation. The rules for the twins are simple: they each get to invite three guests, and the other twin doesn’t know who’s coming until the guests show up at the door. With Sam and Ilsa, the sibling revelry is always tempered with a large dose of sibling rivalry, and tonight is no exception. One night. One apartment. Eight people. What could possibly go wrong? Oh, we all know the answer is plenty. But plenty also goes right – in rather surprising ways.

I hate to say that each collaboration between Levithan & Cohen has been a step down from the wonder that was Nick & Norah. I love their process of passing the chapters back and forth, but now the curveballs seem forced, the dodges obvious. I really wanted to love it but didn‘t. 😕

Short synopsis: Sam and Ilsa are teenage twins throwing a last amazing dinner party in their grandmother‘s rent-controlled NYC apartment before college. Hijinks ensue.

I wanted to love it and while it dipped a tiny bit for me at retain parts, I loved this! Just the right length, absolutely realistic, and thoroughly enjoyable!

Pickpick

Over one evening, entirely inside an apartment building, two siblings throw a party as a ‘recess from the hum drum.‘ There‘s a great sense of the event unfolding, with not so much bomb shells as small unravellings as the night goes on. It‘s a sweet little time capsule of one night, with strong voices from the two main characters.
