Coffin Scarcely Used
Coffin Scarcely Used | Colin Watson
5 posts | 5 read | 2 to read
Described by Cecil Day-Lewis as 'a great lark, full of preposterous situations and pokerfaced wit', Coffin Scarcely Usedis Colin Watson's first Flaxborough novel and was originally published in 1958. The small town of Flaxborough is taken aback when one of the mourners at Councillor Carobelat's funeral dies just six months later. Not only was he Councillor Carobelat's neighbour but the circumstances of his death are rather unusual, even for Flaxborough standards. Marcus Gwill, proprietor of the Flaxborough Citizen has been found electrocuted at the foot of an electricity pylon with a mouth full of marshmallows. Local gossip rules it as either an accident or a suicide but Inspector Purbright remains unconvinced. After all, he's never encountered a suicide who has been in the mood for confectionery at the last moment...

After reading several of the Flaxbrough series I have now purchased the DVD of the TV series based on the books which should prove interesting.

First published in 1958 and described as Sharp and stylish and wickedly funny there was nothing I found funny in the book. However what I did find was a story that was intriguing and very enjoyable. Pure detective fiction at its best, relaxing to read and not one swear word was present. There is no looking up of details on computers just pure 1950's leg work with a very capable detective and side kick who is still learning the job. A v.good read.

There was a piece about Watson in the latest edition of Slightly Foxed, and this one was 99¢ and I couldn‘t decide what to read next, and, welp, here we are.

This is the first in a series of detective stories first written in the 1950s but about to be reissued (hence the arc sticker 😉) set in the town of Flaxborough. Your detective is a local policeman - so it‘s a police procedural but gentler and more cozy than I find that implies. I really enjoyed it and would happily read more in the series.
