F You Very Much: Understanding the Culture of Rudeness--and What We Can Do About It | Danny Wallace
20 posts | 4 read | 8 to read
From the bestselling author of Yes Man, a hilarious and pitch-perfect look at the rudeness that's all around us -- where it comes from, how it affects us, and what we can do about it You're not just imagining it: People are getting more and more rude - from cutting in line, gabbing on their phones and clipping their nails on public transportation, to hurling epithets on Twitter and in real life (including a certain President who does both). And the worst part is that it's contagious, leading reasonably courteous people to stoop to new lows in order to respond to the ever-coarsening encounters we face every day. In this engaging and illuminating new book, bestselling author and all-around curious guy Danny Wallace looks at the reasons behind the rudeness, and what we can do to stop it. His quest to stop the madness includes interviews with neuroscientists, psychologists, NASA scientists, politicians, and other experts. He joins a Radical Honesty group, talks to LA drivers about road rage, and confronts his own online troll in a pub--all to better understand the scourge that's turning normal people into bullies, tantruming toddlers, trolls, and other types of everyday monsters. Want to be part of the solution? Let Danny Wallace be your smart and funny guide.

Why do these disproportionate reactions happen? We see it all the time--road rage, fury erupting on the streets because someone's blocking the sidewalk, insane outbursts on public transportation. James suggests something called victim-oriented narcissism. The sufferer becomes incredibly angry at the smallest perceived slight because in their heads it is far more: it is an attack on them as a human being.

keithmalek The James that he's referring to here is Aaron James, author of Assholes: A Theory. 6y

After Trump was elected, the American Historical Association--the largest society of historians and professors of history in the States--put out a statement, the first paragraph of which ended: "Historians can say with confidence that this is not our nation's finest hour. Language previously relegated to the margins has moved out of the shadows, emboldening elements of society less interested in a more perfect union than in division and derision."

Annl I notice this a lot in traffic. 6y
keithmalek @Annl Yes. He has an entire chapter on road rage. In fact, I'm going to be posting a few quotes on this later. 6y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I just ran across this phrase and a footnote discussing it in my Tolkien read...apparently to a certain generation of Brits, this was along the lines of “keep a stiff upper lip”. In other words just stay strong. 6y

OMG! Yes, yes, yes! I checked this out of the library, and after I returned it, I bought my own copy. If you think people are acting ruder these days, it‘s not your imagination. So much information packed into this book. Informative, humorous, entertaining, and practical. Highly recommend.
