Ignorance
Ignorance: A Novel | Milan Kundera
A New York Times Notable Book Irena and Josef meet by chance while returning to their homeland, which they had abandoned twenty years earlier. Will they manage to pick up the thread of their strange love story, interrupted almost as soon as it began and then lost in the tides of history? The truth is that after such a long absence "their memories no longer match."

This is a very touching depiction of how it feels to be an immigrant returning to your home country 20 or 30 years later. After the fall of communism in 1989 in Europe, Irena returns from Paris to Prague. She and others like her return led by nostalgia, but the ignorance, under all its forms, displayed by their relatives and former friends shows how absence can create a huge chasm between people, with no hope to reconnect with the past.

#QuotsyJune18 Day 7: #Nostalgia is an “unappeased yearning to return” says Kundera. He may just be right.

GatheringBooks @ComradeMao it has been such a long time since i have read him. i hope your current read is as exquisite as the first time you read him. glad to see you still actively reading!!! 😍 makes me happy. 🧚🏼‍♀️ 6y
ComradeMao @GatheringBooks I enjoyed it just as much, if not more. It‘s interesting how after 8 years, I came to appreciate parts of the book I never really appreciated as a younger reader. I‘m struggling through a Chinese philosophy book at the moment! 🤣🤣🤣Wondering if I should just throw it out! 😂 But still persevering so far! It‘s like darn it, I‘ve read 3/4 of it‘s such a pity to give it up now. 🤭🤭 6y

A beautiful book about nostalgia. Milan Kundera is a delicious writer, describing human feelings in such a delicate way that we can‘t but feel for the characters.
Nostalgia and a lot of uncomfortable questions slowly creep into your head, leaving you wondering for a long time. Feeling sad for human condition, but also comforted because you recognise so much. The novel does what the best books should accomplish, enriching you as a human.

Ignorance: A Novel | Milan Kundera

Eventually we come to know and understand a lot of things, but it's too late, because a whole life has already been determined at a stage when we didn't know a thing.
