American by Day
American by Day | Derek B. Miller
7 posts | 5 read | 13 to read
A gripping and timely novel that follows Sigridthe dry-witted detective from Derek B. Miller's best-selling debut Norwegian by Nightfrom Oslo to the United States on a quest to find her missing brother Chief Inspector Sigrid degrd could be basking in the success of her recent mission to save an innocent child whod gone missing in Oslo, but instead she is reeling from the deadly showdown that preceded that success. She has decided to take some time off from her job and visit her father at the family farm, where she hopes to relax and consider the implications of her role in recent events. Unfortunately her father has other plans for her. You're going to America, he tells her. Why? To look for her older brother, Marcus. He's missing. And more than that, it seems his disappearance is connected in some way to the death of a woman he lovedan African-American professor named Lydia Jones. A connection now being investigated by a certain Sheriff Irving Wylie . . . Like Norwegian by Night, which had the brains of a literary novel and the body of a thriller (New York Times), American by Day is both thought-provoking and suspenseful. Through the eyes of the inimitable Inspector degrd, Derek Miller offers a refreshingly funny, disturbing, and slyly perceptive vision of American life.

Loved this as much as Norwegian by Night. Sigrid is the police officer from the prior book. Her brother Marcus moved to America and had a relationship with another professor - a black woman whose 12 yr old nephew was gunned down by a white officer while playing in the yard- grand jury finds the shooting justified. The professor dies falling out of a building and Marcus is the suspect. The American system from Norwegian viewpoint is revelatory 5⭐️

Norwegian by Night was a 2017 5⭐️ read for me and I was first on the hold list for the second in the #SigridOdegard series when Sigrid is sent to the US by her father to search for her brother who has gone missing. Let‘s hope book 2 lives up to book 1

Lisaw13 I've had Norwegian by Night on my list forever - maybe it's time to move it up! 7y
Booksnchill @Lisaw13 I loved it - there is a young boy, and an old codger like Ove if you like that it is extra good! 7y

The sequel to Norwegian At Night. This installment was even better than the first. you can read this book as a stand-alone, but the ending of the first book is spoiled at the beginning of the second. Segrid finds herself going to America to look for her brother who hasn‘t beThis book has an outsider view of America which adds a dimension to the story. Highly recommend the series. #netgalley
