Cold Skies
Cold Skies: A DreadfulWater Mystery | Thomas King
9 posts | 4 read | 3 to read
Thumps DreadfulWater has finally found some peace and quiet. His past as a California cop now far behind him, hes living out his retirement as a fine-arts photographer in the small town of Chinook. His health isnt great, and he could use a new stove, but as long as hes got his cat and a halfway decent plate of eggs, life is good. All that changes when a body turns up on the eve of a major water conference and the understaffed sheriffs department turns to Thumps for help. Thumps wants none of it, but even he is intrigued when he learns the deceased was developing a new technology that could revolutionize water and oil drilling . . . and that could also lose some very powerful people a lot of money. As strangers begin to pour into Chinook for the conference, Thumps finds himself sinking deeper and deeper into a conflict between secretive players who will kill to get what they want. In Cold Skies, the sly, wry, reluctant investigator of DreadfulWater and The Red Power Murders returns for another irresistible mystery that only Thomas King could tell.

I love King‘s wry humour and that Thumps DreadfulWater has a cat! This series has characters that are sometimes colourful but never “quirky”, and the books tackle serious issues with a light touch.

I really like the Thumps DreadfulWater mysteries and this one is no exception. I kind of figured out who the villain was early on, not the why though and it doesn‘t matter to me. The dialogue makes me laugh out loud often and I like getting to know the characters better and I like how in the retell/reintroduction bits TK adds more details and fleshes out the story more. This one ended on a cliff hanger 😳

Just started the next Thumps Dreadfulwater mystery. It‘s raining and grey outside and I didn‘t sleep well last night for whatever reason, so I‘m having some tea and reading in bed. I‘m hoping everyone thinks take out for dinner is a good idea

Thumps Dreadfulwater is an enjoyable detective from the rather zany imagination of Thomas King. Some of the characters were rather abruptly introduced by otherwise I enjoyed this murder mystery. It's always interesting to me when authors take on different genres.

I don't want to log a proper review of COLD SKIES. It was a resounding So-So--BUT I'm 85% sure that was down to my mood, not to anything Thomas King did. It's got all the elements that made the first two Thumps DreadfulWater books so compelling, but somehow I found it a total slog with a few moments of genuine engagement.

Everyone else I know who's read it enjoyed it as much as the others, though, so it's like I said: it was probably my mood.

Investigator Thumps DreadfulWater has retired from California to the small town of Chinook, where he spends his time as a fine-arts photographer. He's enjoying the peace and quiet until a body turns up on the eve of a major conference and Thumps is asked by the understaffed sheriff‘s department to help. Thomas King will be at #emwf18 to read from Cold Skies, the third book in the Thumps DreadfulWater mystery series! bit.ly/2KnBw2P #canlit
