My Life (Da Capo Press)
My Life (Da Capo Press) | Marc Chagall
2 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
My Life was written in Moscow in 1921-1922, when Chagall was thirty-five years old. Although long out-of-print, it remains one of the most extraordinarily inventive and beautifully told of all autobiographies. The text is accompanied by twenty plates which Chagall prepared especially to illustrate his life story. Together, the words and pictures paint an incomparable portrait of one of the greatest painters of this century, and of the now vanished milieu which inspired him.

The most remarkable thing about this autobiography is that it is artistically written in such a way that the reader recognizes characteristics of Chagall‘s visual art in his writing. Well worth a read, especially if you are a fan of Chagall‘s work. #alphabetgame #letterM @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

What a little marvel this book is! Twenty pictures by Chagall show us a glimpse of his life. The texts accompanying those paintings are taken from Chagall's autobiography. Both work perfectly together, and the epilogue gives a little more background information about the origins of the pictures.
