On the Edge of Reason
On the Edge of Reason | Miroslav Krleza
3 posts | 2 read | 4 to read
"On the Edge of Reason is one of the great European novels of the first half of the twentieth century and Krleza's themes, his seriousness, his protest against the normality of delusion and cruelty, could hardly be more relevant to the century's end." Susan Sontag During his long and distinguished career, the Croatian writer Miroslav Krleza (1893-1981) battled against many forms of tyranny. In On the Edge of Reason, his protagonist is a middle-aged lawyer whose life and career have been eminently respectable and respected. One evening, at a party attended by the local elite, he inadvertently blurts out an honest thought. From this moment, all hell breaks loose.... On the Edge of Reason reveals the fundamental chasm between conformity and individuality. As folly piles on folly, hypocrisy on hypocrisy, reason itself begins to give way, and the edge between reality and unreality disappears.

Mehso-so

This book takes place in a #Croatian town during the interbellum. The main character belongs to the local elite as a legal adviser. When he makes a “morally insane” at a party, it becomes clear to him how petty and horrible that elite really is. This discovery means the start of a lonely resistance. Despite a general boycott, he doesn‘t take back his statement. This leads ultimately inevitably to his downfall. #ReadingEurope2020 🇭🇷 #1001books

Librarybelle At least it also marks off a 1001 book! 5y

#WeeklyForecast 08/20

I have started The House on the Borderland on audio and am reading On the Edge of Reason for
#ReadingEurope2020. Next will be Optic Nerve (another #ToB read) and I hope to get to Drive Your Plow as well: reviews about it have made me very curious!

Librarybelle I‘m curious to see what you think of Drive Your Plow...I liked it, but it‘s a different sort of book! 5y
BarbaraBB @Librarybelle Your post about it was one that intrigued me! 5y
Liz_M On the Edge of Reason -- that's the one about the judge? If so it's not bad. 5y

Daisey I‘m very curious about Drive Your Plow . . . as well. It‘s on my list in a few months for a book club. 5y
BarbaraBB @Liz_M It‘s not about a judge, or at least not yet. 5y
BarbaraBB @Liz_M He is a juridical advisor though, of the Croatian upperclass. Until he says something unforgivable. 5y

Today‘s prompt is #Croatia. My #1001books tbr shelf of Goodreads to the rescue again....

From the description: The plot follows the mayhem that ensues after the protagonist, a middle-aged lawyer and a model citizen in every way, inadvertently utters an honest observation rather than the canned response that is expected.

I‘m looking forward to this one!
