Alabama Spitfire: The Story of Harper Lee and to Kill a Mockingbird
Alabama Spitfire: The Story of Harper Lee and to Kill a Mockingbird | Bethany Hegedus
6 posts | 8 read | 6 to read
The inspiring true story of Harper Lee, the girl who grew up to write To Kill a Mockingbird, from Bethany Hegedus and Erin McGuire. Perfect for fans of The Right Word and I Dissent. Nelle Harper Lee grew up in the rocky red soil of Monroeville, Alabama. From the get-go she was a spitfire.Unlike most girls at that time and place, Nelle preferred overalls to dresses and climbing trees to tea parties. Nelle loved to watch her daddy try cases in the courtroom. And she and her best friend, Tru, devoured books and wrote stories of their own. More than anything Nelle loved words. This love eventually took her all the way to New York City, where she dreamed of becoming a writer. Any chance she had, Nelle sat at her typewriter, writing, revising, and chasing her dream. Nelle wouldn't give up--not until she discovered the right story, the one she was born to tell. Finally, that story came to her, and Nelle, inspired by her childhood, penned To Kill a Mockingbird. A groundbreaking book about small-town injustice that has sold over forty million copies, Nelle's novel resonated with readers the world over, who, through reading, learned what it was like to climb into someone else's skin and walk around in it.

#BoundTogetherJune Day 22: Harper Lee was notorious for being a recluse. Hence, it is with such delight that I get to know more about her childhood and her life through this fascinating picturebook biography of a Southern heroine who wrote a story that is now considered to be an #unforgettable American classic. Okay, so I really liked this, but I am a 42-year old woman who loves To Kill a Mockingbird and is fascinated with Harper Lee. Not exactly the intended audience for this picture book biography. There is also zero controversy addressed in this book, whether about “Tru” (Truman Capote) or the circumstances surrounding the publication of Go Set a Watchman. Review continued in comments.

Krisjericho This presents an incomplete picture of a woman most kids don‘t know about until they are older. Love the art, love the background, but there is a lack of a clear audience. 6y

Two I have on loan from the library. Cossins‘ illustrations are evocative. I am so excited to be visiting Alabama in November.

Every Harper Lee fan needs this book and more so if you have children. This is a beautifully illustrated, simple story of the life of Harper Lee and how she came to write our beloved TKAM. I cannot recommend this book highly enough for true fans of Nelle Harper Lee.

I couldn‘t resist sharing my girl this morning! She chose to be Young Harper Lee from one of our favorite new children‘s books. I couldn‘t be more proud of her choice! #ReadAcrossAmericaDay

aprilpohren She is adorable!! 💖 7y
jessijames Thank you so much @aprilpohren! I‘m glad she chose to step outside the box of Junie B, Pinkalicious, and other typical characters! Pretty smart 1st grader if I do say so myself! 😊 7y
