Sharing Knife Volume One: Beguilement
Sharing Knife Volume One: Beguilement | Lois McMaster Bujold
4 posts | 12 read | 4 to read
"Bujold builds a better fantasy romance with compelling characters and the fascinating clash between their cultures, she a farmer's daughter, he an adventurer on the trail of a deadly demon."--LocusOne of the most respected writers in the field of speculative fiction, Lois McMaster Bujold has won numerous accolades and awards, including the Nebula and Locus Awards as well as the fantasy and science fiction genre's most prestigious honor, the Hugo Award for Best Novel, four times (most recently for Paladin of Souls). With The Sharing Knife series, Bujold creates a brand new world fraught with peril, and spins an extraordinary romance between a young farm girl and the brave sorcerer-soldier entrusted with the defense of the land against a plague of vicious malevolent beings. Meet Fawn Bluefield and Dag Redwing Hickory in Beguilement, the first book in Bujold's unforgettable four-volume fantasy saga, and witness the birth of their dangerous romance--a love threatened by prejudice and perilous magic, and by Dag's sworn duty as Lakewalker patroller and necromancer.

Mehso-so

This is my least favorite Bujold so far. I usually love her romances—but that‘s because the character interactions largely serve the plot, whereas in this book it‘s the other way round. I was fascinated by the worldbuilding and the magic of the knives, but the second half of the book dragged with all the focus being on the couple. The ending is abrupt, but it was originally conceived as a single book—I may read the second to get more of the world!

I loved this when it first came out but have never read it since. How wonderful to find it still lives up to its title. Such strong, appealing characters who somehow find each other.

esurient Oh, wow. I enjoyed this series, but that cover looks awful. 6y
SkeletonKey @esurient - Right? 😂 she‘s such a good writer but I‘m having trouble getting past the age difference as well. 6y
esurient @SkeletonKey Fair point! My memories recall him being very respectful and her becoming increasingly more assertive (not that she started especially unassertive) which helped a lot for me. That said, i prefer on the whole the Chalion series. 6y

Pickpick

My third book finished this year. A sweet love story set in a fantasy world. I was a little creeped out by the age difference between the two main characters, but if you can get past it, a very engaging book.
