The Curse of Chalion
The Curse of Chalion | Lois McMaster Bujold
A man broken in body and spirit, Cazaril returns to the noble household he once served as page and is named secretary-tutor to the beautiful, strong-willed sister of the impetuous boy who is next in line to rule. It is an assignment Cazaril dreads, for it must ultimately lead him to the place he most fears: the royal court of Cardegoss, where the powerful enemies who once placed him in chains now occupy lofty positions. But it is more than the traitorous intrigues of villains that threaten Cazaril and the Royesse Iselle here, for a sinister curse hangs like a sword over the entire blighted House of Chalion. And only by employing the darkest, most forbidden of magics can Cazaril hope to protect his royal charge -- an act that will mark him as a tool of the miraculous . . . and trap him in a lethal maze of demonic paradox.

SUPER belated review—this was my book club pick in January. 😆

I LOVED this. It checked so many boxes for me: court intrigue, a mysterious curse, an intriguing & thought-provoking magic/religious system, and a humble & clever protagonist who‘s more than he seems. I loved the main characters & was infuriated by others. I‘d heard Bujold was good, but somehow missed reading her until now—this will definitely not be the last book of hers that I read!

BarbaraJean This also checks off 2001 for #192025! 🎉 @librarybelle (edited) 8mo

willaful The sequel is even better! 8mo
BarbaraJean @willaful That‘s what I‘ve heard! A friend effusively recommended Paladin of Souls, but then made me promise to read Curse of Chalion first 😆 8mo

If only I‘d been better organized I could have gotten multiple bingos 😂 Still, a very respectable month of reading!

Having read later books in this series, I did not expect the protagonist to be Cazaril. But that‘s part of Bujold‘s genius: she so often takes characters who seem and feel insignificant at the beginning and gradually raises and expands them until you realize by the end of the book that they‘ve saved the world. I loved this book and I really need to make sure I read everything Bujold has ever published. CW: animal death (also plenty of human death)

If you want to read fantasy novel where there are mystical creatures, do not read this book. If you are in the mood for a political court drama filled with betrayal, a curse/dark magic, royals, a broken middle aged man/hero and love, then read this first book of #hugoaward winning series.

#NovemberbytheNumbers #Five

Lois McMaster Bujold is one of my favorite authors. These books are fascinating character studies and exciting action adventures. And the religion, an original construct is very interesting. The main character of the first one is a woman of advanced age (refreshing and different)!

Epic high fantasy of the best kind, these are some of my favorite series. Excellent character development paired with excellent world-building.

TrishB Loved that Kate Elliott series - so many characters, world building, action - I don't think she reached the heights again. 8y
RanaElizabeth @TrishB I remember loving her Court of Fives, but don't think I got past the first in the series. 8y

I have read this book six or seven times. It is my emergency book, for when I need something to read at a café or on a train. It is a masterclass in characterisation giving us a whole host of complex, intelligent, and engaging characters. Easily makes my list of ten books to take to a deserted island.

I'm enamored of the characters in this fantasy novel. A masterful job of world-building creates real gravitas and political intrigue. A truly thoughtful tale told deliberately.
