Not a paranormal Christmas rom-com. Just a paranormal Christmas comedy. Fun. And the recipes at the end of the book are a special treat.

I‘m used to Christmas rom-coms. I think this is the first Chanukah rom-com I‘ve read. It was a nice change. And it was interesting to learn about how observant Jews and non-observant Jews celebrated in their own ways and with each other. This is the first book in a series. I‘ve read the second and third and will review those next. There‘s going to be at least one more for the holidays next year because there‘s still one more member of this(cont)⬇️

This was another fun romantasy by Molly Harper. I guess it‘s a romantasy. Or is it a paranormal romance? There is a plot plus ghosts and witches. Whatever you call it, I definitely enjoyed it.

#LitsyCrafters Do any of you remember the cross stitch cross that I was supposed to be working on? Well, I still don‘t have the heart for it. But this week I was thinking about what I want to give the two women who help me around the house for Christmas and I‘d been thinking about some thermal mugs in their favorite colors. I started this book for November‘s #AuthorAMonth. Maybe at another time of year or if I were in a different frame of mind I‘d be able to finish it. It‘s all a little too surreal for me. Going to see 2001: A Space Odyssey starring Clint Eastwood and Yul Brynner??! I listened for over two hours and I just can‘t. I understand that the author is going to try to make us think about something in a different way, but I don‘t feel like it.

CatLass007 It has the same feel, in a way, as Waiting for Godot, only much, much longer. 1w

Molly Harper does paranormal romance better than most. I loved her Mystic Bayou series!! This is the first book in the Starfall Point series and I believe it is going to be just as good. But no one hits a home run all the time and I really couldn‘t get into Nice Girls Don‘t Have Fangs, her first book in the Half-Moon Hollow series. That‘s a book I couldn‘t finish so I never continued the series. But Witches Get Stuff Done is FUN!!

I joined the inaugural #ClassicLSFBC #BuddyRead with this selection. I finished it yesterday but I‘m not sure what I think about it. I think its take on teleportation, Jaunting, is unique as far as I am aware. No equipment necessary, just the power of the mind. Gully Foyle begins as an aimless brute, but because of his abandonment by the Vorga some part of him is awakened by his thirst for vengeance. This is the catalyst that causes him (cont)⬇️

CatLass007 to discover who he is and reinvent himself, not just on the outside, but also on the inside. By the end of the book he has come to understand and regret the pain he has caused others. He learns of the futility of his thirst for revenge. When he learns what PyrE is and how it is activated, he basically blackmails those in charge into either destroying humanity or figuring out how to make peace. (edited) 1w
CatLass007 I would like to add that this is not a future in which I would care to live. There are very few haves and a multitude of have-nots. And I could never tolerate the anti-woman attitude that prevails. I‘m sure in some part of the book‘s human society, there are women wearing metal chastity belts. 🤬 (edited) 1w
Ruthiella Great review! It was interesting that he proposed a society where women were often completely isolated and restricted, though it seemed to be only the upper classes that did so. 1w

I remember being required to read what I think was a short story. I don‘t believe it was an excerpt of anything. I think it was when I was in college. We won‘t mention that makes it more than 40 years ago. I seem to recall that there was a man who worked in the boiler room or something on a cruise ship. There was a female passenger who saw him, maybe she fell or dropped something and he tried to help her, maybe he encountered her in some (cont) ⬇️

Something like “filthy ape” or “stupid ape” or something that would have caused him to break into the zoo at night and try to communicate with the apes there. I can‘t remember if he broke into the gorilla cage or what exactly happened but the gorilla squeezed him to death. The reason this came to mind is because all the (cont) ⬇️ 2w

I just started listening to this a couple of hours ago. Is anyone else from #ClassicLSFBC listening? And for those reading this in print, does your version include the introduction “Of Time, and Gully Foyle” by Neil Gaiman? Gaiman is a fine writer and he has a wonderful voice, but he is not narrating his intro, and that‘s a disappointment. The method of teleportation Bester has created is innovative and has captured my imagination.

RamsFan1963 I thought this book was good, but not Bester's best (forgive the wording) novel. Maybe later we can read The Demolished Man, which I think is the better novel, and one of the great sci-fi detective stories. 2w

I don‘t think I realized how many Italians were Jewish until I began this book. I‘m trying to figure out what that says about me. Any book about Jews in World War II is going to be sad and will refer to the atrocities perpetrated by the Nazis. Binti is a wonderful character! The world building in this series is well done. I love the different people she meets on her journey. The first book in this series was released in September 2015. I think sometime between then and now there was some legal wrangling that kept any more books in the series from being published. And something really cool is that her Hunter series is included with my Audible subscription and I had already added the books to my library. Thank you for such a resounding recommendation. The series has been bumped up on my list, thanks to you. 2mo
iread2much @CatLass007 that‘s great! I hope you enjoy them 😊 2mo
CatLass007 @iread2much Thank you. There are quite a few of her books that are included with my Audible subscription. And she has a collaborator or two with several of those books. Interesting. 2mo
Bookwomble Steampunk as a term was coined by K. W. Jeter for his tagged sci-fi novel, but there are precursors of the style before he named it. It's developed into a hybrid genre that can include fantasy and supernatural elements. I guess that if it looks like steampunk, locomotes like steampunk and clanks like steampunk, it's steampunk! 🚂🤖🤖🤖😁 (edited) 2mo
CatLass007 @Bookwomble Thank you. I like knowing the origins of words. Who knew you could explain so much in so few words? Something odd is that I just used the 🚂 emoji in a text to my cousin, who is a train conductor. I didn‘t even know there was a train emoji until about two minutes before I read your comment. I will look up the book you tagged. 2mo

My reading buddy | Manya Weg

I like reading and discussing books with my friends on Litsy. I completely understand that no one is forcing me to participate in buddy reads. Everyone says that the buddy reads I‘ve signed up for are laid back, no pressure. I think that‘s great! I guess the only reason I‘m feeling overwhelmed is because I‘m not very good at laid back, no pressure. So please, keep me in your tag lists about new books and discussions. I just need (cont) ⬇️

CatLass007 to do things a little differently than everyone else until I get used to being part of Litsy again. 2mo
BarkingMadRead I‘ll tag you until you ask me not to, I never go by participation! I always sign up for way too many buddy reads and sometimes I just don‘t want to comment. I totally get it! 2mo
CatLass007 @BarkingMadRead Thank you. The only one putting pressure on me is me. All the hosts have been great! 2mo

TheBookHippie ♥️ #SUNDAYBUDDYREAD is a non tag no pressure answer when want thing . Do you want to be tagged in #CHILDRENSCLASSICREAD2024 ? Mine are so laid back. 2mo
CatLass007 @TheBookHippie Thank you. I know you don‘t tag when you do your weekly discussion questions. It‘s up to us to be adults and remember that they occur every Sunday. I tried the September #SundayBuddyRead, The Ivy Tree, but I didn‘t care for it so I decided to pass. I‘m skipping November also. But you definitely can count me in for December. Thank you for the invitation to #ChildrenClassicRead2024, but, while I do love children‘s (cont)⬇️ (edited) 2mo
CatLass007 @TheBookHippie literature, most of my books are still packed away. I missed when the reading schedule for September was posted. You don‘t tag for that either, right? When do you usually post the reading schedule so I have a good idea for when to look. I‘ve seen the schedule for 2024 and it helps to be able to plan my book-buying budget for next year. Did you tag when you posted your 2024 list? I don‘t know if I just happened upon it (cont)⬇️ (edited) 2mo
CatLass007 @TheBookHippie just scrolling through my feed or what exactly happened. (edited) 2mo
Soubhiville I also keep my tag list for #authoramonth through the whole year, so I‘ll keep tagging you unless you ask to be removed. Join in whenever you‘d like, skip months when you don‘t feel like it. (I usually manage to read about half the authors each year.) 2mo
CatLass007 @Soubhiville Thank you. That would be just great! 2mo
TheSpineView Anything I host is ALWAYS optional to participate in and at whatever level you feel comfortable. So participate today or not, next week or not, etc. I tag people regardless if they participate or not until they request me to stop. If you want to follow along and not participate that's cool too. 2mo
CatLass007 @TheSpineView Thank you so much! 2mo
TheAromaofBooks I will keep you on the list for now, but no hard feelings if you decide you want to not be on the tag list!! Sometimes it starts to make reading feel like a chore instead of fun, which sort of defeats the purpose of a relaxing hobby! 😂 For next year's #RandomClassics I'll tag everyone on the masterlist each month, and everyone can decide then if they want to get tagged for that month's specific book. 2mo

I enjoyed this book very much. Whodunit was much easier to figure out than in the first book in the series. The author seemed like she was wrapping up everyone‘s stories for the last time. At the same time it seemed she was setting the stage for future books. The ending was somewhat unsatisfying because it left Jonathan and Juliet with questions about how the other felt. But it was fairly certain that they knew their own minds and hearts.(cont)⬇️

CatLass007 I know I put the spoiler tag on this review but I‘m still trying not to spoil anything. I want to see Jonathan and Juliet get their HEA now. I don‘t want to hear a sentence or two about how they will meet again in the future. 2mo

I listened to this as the September selection for the #LitsySciFiBookClub but I didn‘t finish until October 1st. Oh, well. I am so glad I listened to this book! It was entertaining and compelling. The narrator WAS Ryland Grace. And he is one of the few male narrators, probably the best I‘ve heard, who does women‘s voices well. Run to your library or book store and pick up this book now, if you haven‘t already. I‘m behind most of you.

TheSpineView It is a great book. I still have not started my reread but I did pick up the audio version. Your review makes me glad I did. ❤️📖🎧 2mo
Liatrek Loved the audio❤️ 2mo
CatLass007 @TheSpineView I‘m glad you‘re going to listen to it this time. For some reason I was hesitant about this author, maybe because he seemed to be “the next big thing.” But he deserves the acclaim if this is the quality with which he always writes. I‘m going to do my best to read his other books as well. Do you know when we‘ll be voting on the selection for October? I‘m kind of impatient to listen to another new author. Or revisit an old friend. 2mo

CatLass007 I actually had to stop listening for a while when I thought Rocky had sacrificed his life to save Grace. It came as such a huge shock. 💔 But as in much science fiction he died… and then he got better. ❤️‍🩹 2mo
TheSpineView I was planning on taking suggestions towards the end of the week. Then voting the following week. 2mo
CatLass007 @TheSpineView I don‘t really have any suggestions or requests. I am trying to listen to SF books already in my library, and I‘m awfully picky about reading books in the order they were written or were intended to be read. I have almost every book in the Dune Saga, the same goes for the Ender Saga. I have a number, but not all, of books by Connie Willis and David Brin. There are more books in my Audible wish list than I care to remember. (cont)⬇️ 2mo
CatLass007 @TheSpineView So, I will be happy to listen to any books, both by old friends and new. Just sign me up! 2mo

The Scarlet Letter | Nathaniel Hawthorne

@TheAromaofBooks I overcommitted to too many buddy reads for September and I don‘t want to make the same mistake in October. So I‘ve decided to opt out #TheScarletLetter, although I‘d still like to remain on the tag list so I can read the snarky hashtags and find out what others think and feel about the story of Hester Prynne and her daughter Pearl. #RandomClassics

TheAromaofBooks Sounds good!! I'll tag you when I (randomly haha) post and you can jump in on the discussions whenever you like!! 2mo

I enjoyed this very much for #AuthorAMonth. Binti is a Master Harmonizer, she sees beauty in numbers. She sees the world around her in numbers, so she sees the beauty all around. When she encounters an alien race for the first time she is harmonizing a peace between them and humanity. I listened to this in audio format and the narrator‘s voice was especially lovely.

It seemed to start off a little slow, but then it picked up so I kept listening. This is the first book I‘ve listened to narrated by Wil Wheaton and I wasn‘t exactly sure how I‘d react to a story read by Wesley Crusher. But he did a good job. I could tell which character he was voicing when he spoke, which I believe is vital when listening to a book. Down with books narrated by AI! Enjoy folks! Now back to our regularly scheduled reading.

#HashtagBrigade I wanted to love this, since I loved the first three books by Forster that I‘ve read. And sometimes I did love it. The language is lush and beautiful. The descriptions of the Hindu and Muslim faiths were entrancing. The prejudices of the different races and religions were very apparent. Except I‘ve never understood racism and religionism. The exchange between Aziz and Mrs. Moore in the mosque and the exchange between (cont)⬇️

CatLass007 Aziz and Mrs. Moore‘s son, Ralph, were almost dreamlike. And I still want to bash everyone‘s heads together for their stupid behavior. Maybe I don‘t understand the mindset of any character in this book. Maybe that‘s what made it so difficult for me to make it through. But it‘s been so many years since I read anything by Forster that I‘m considering re-reading it to see how my perspective has changed. And I‘d try reading more Forster also. 2mo

I‘m signed up for a number of buddy reads and I‘m having a difficult time keeping track of them. So I‘m going to list as many as I can, along with the host. Please help me add any In which I‘ve shown an interest or I may have forgotten.

CatLass007 @StayCurious @Librarybelle @BarkingMadRead @TheAromaofBooks @TheSpineView @CBee Can any or all of you help me out? Am I listed on any of the buddy reads of which you belong and I seem to have forgotten? Could any of you please offer suggestions for buddy reads in which I might like to participate or for which I might have forgotten to register. How many of these buddy reads will be taking votes for all of next year? How many will be (cont)⬇️ 2mo
CatLass007 taking votes for one month at a time? Anything about buddy reads I might have forgotten to ask? I think I remember seeing a post for October that‘s #Scaretathalon or something and another that focuses on audiobooks? 2mo
TEArificbooks @CatLass007 #scarathlon is a month long reading challenge in October. Go to @Clwojick page to sign up and she will put you on a team. You get points for spooky book you read, ever spooky movie, craft, etc. 2mo
TEArificbooks I am the host of #witchathon which is a month long reading challenge in October where you just read at least one witchy book of your choice. No sign up required, you just post and tag me and witchathon when you have read a witchy book. Low key no stress. 2mo
CatLass007 @TEArificbooks Thank you so much! I‘m probably not going to join something in which points are given, I don‘t want to push myself beyond my stress levels. I‘m very competitive and I just want Litsy and buddy reads to be my safe place. But #witchathon sounds like fun. I‘m sure I can find one or ten witchy books in my audio library. 2mo
StayCurious Hi! I host #pemberlittens #JaneAdjacent where we read books somehow linked to Jane Austen. We vote each month on our next book. Although for October we‘ve decided to read the next book in a series - let me know if you‘d like to join! 2mo
StayCurious I also host #LittensLoveRomance where we read romance books all year long. Each month is a different sub genre and we vote monthly. 2mo
5feet.of.fury Do you do #losersclub with @BarkingMadRead ? All the Stephen King in order 2mo
Librarybelle Yes, I have your name for the tag list for the rest of 2023 for #LiteraryCrew . I leave it up to everyone if they prefer to be tagged on certain months or if they wish to be tagged each month. It‘s very low key! I will soon open suggestions from the group for 2024 and then open voting. Look for details soon on that! 2mo
Librarybelle I am also starting a #NancyDrewBR , where the group reads one Nancy Drew a month in series order. The first discussion of the first book, The Secret of the Old Clock, is November 15th. This coincides with @TheBookHippie ‘s November read of this book for her classic children‘s buddy read group. 2mo
TheAromaofBooks I do have you on the #RandomClassics list!! I set the books I'm going to read for the year, and then anyone who wants to read along can do so. Anyone is welcome to skip a month/book that doesn't appeal to them or that they don't want to reread or whatever. Each book is kind of its own thing!! 2mo
BarkingMadRead @Librarybelle can you add me to your tag list for Nancy Drew?!? That‘s so cool! 2mo
TheBookHippie I do #SUNDAYBUDDYREAD AND #CHILDRENSCLASSICREAD2023 The year changes as we go 2mo
CatLass007 @StayCurious I definitely want to join in with #PemberLittens #JaneAdjacent. Please count me in for as long as it lasts. I definitely want to read the second book in the series, and any others that may follow. Lots of different mystery series surrounding Jane and her literary offspring. I‘m not usually a reader of romance, but I‘d still like to be included in your #LittensLoveRomance — because you never know what my mood will be. Thank you.♥️ (edited) 2mo
CatLass007 @Librarybelle Please keep including me in the #LiteraryCrew notifications unless I ask you to do otherwise. I grew up reading Nancy Drew, but I don‘t think I‘m ready for a reread . Thank you for your answers to my questions and thank you for hosting! 2mo
CatLass007 @TheAromaofBooks Please keep me on the #RandomClassics list. One of the cool things about this list is that so many are free either through Libby as library books or are included with my Audible membership. 2mo
CatLass007 @TheBookHippie please keep me on your list for the #SundayBuddyRead. I wasn‘t able to participate this month because I already overcommitted. 2mo
CatLass007 @5feet.of.fury I was in at the beginning with #losersclub and the #TerryPratchett buddy reads. That was back when there was a lot of upheaval in my life and I became overwhelmed with everything. I don‘t really want to start back with either of those buddy reads. No particular reason. 2mo
CatLass007 @StayCurious @Librarybelle @BarkingMadRead @TheAromaofBooks @TheSpineView @CBee @TEArificbooks @5feet.of.fury @TheBookHippeie Thank you all for answering my questions! I just have one more. Is anyone hosting a #GraphicNovel buddy read? 2mo
Deblovestoread I sign up for many buddy reads and keep a reading journal to keep them all straight. It‘s not fancy but it helps keep me on track. Just the name, the host and the list of books by month. Good luck 😊 2mo
CatLass007 @Deblovestoread Thank you. I keep a journal of what I want to read and for whichever buddy read they belong to. Adding the name of the host might come in handy. I also have a journal of what I‘ll be needing to buy or check out of the library. Books that are already in my Audible library get added to my TBR journal, especially if they are part of a buddy read. 2mo
TheAromaofBooks I definitely have you on the #RandomClassics list!! I'm not sure if anyone is doing an official graphic novel buddy read of any kind - they aren't my usual thing so I don't pay very close attention. 2mo
CatLass007 @TheAromaofBooks Thanks for making sure I‘m on the #RandomClassics notification list. And thanks for the info about a graphic novel group. Oh, well… 2mo

I had no idea there were so many #JaneAdjacent books until just this month! My true confession is that I‘ve read about half of Pride and Prejudice and that‘s pretty much it. I had a terrible time keeping track of all the characters in The Murder of Mr. Wickham. So I‘ll make every effort to take care of catching up with Jane Austen‘s books while still enjoying as many #JaneAdjacent as possible.

StayCurious The great thing about our group #Pemberlittens is that we love to talk all things Jane! Let us know if you have any questions. 2mo

This book was delightful. It was so wonderful listening to Sadie change, not just the way she saw the world, but how she felt about it. In the author's afterward and acknowledgements, I'm not sure if she uses the word kindness, but that was the overall message this book gave me. I give it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 6 stars out of 5.

I enjoyed this mystery and its lessons on the history (and, wow, what a history) of chocolate. I didn‘t really buy the romance, though. It didn‘t build, it just sort of happened near the end of the book. I probably will listen to the second entry in this series, The Cocoa Conspiracy, because I enjoy a good mystery and I want to hear more about the history of chocolate.🍫

This isn‘t the type of book I usually read or listen to, but I‘m really glad that I took the time for this one. I described it to a friend as Die Hard meets Designated Survivor meets MacGyver. This was just so much fun! Yes, it‘s violent and bad things happen, but I‘m pretty much in love with the protagonist (hero?), Dez.
