Glittering Images | Susan Howatch
9 posts | 8 read | 5 to read
It is the 1930s, and Charles Ashworth is dispatched by the Archbishop of Canterbury to learn the truth about the flamboyant Bishop of Starbridge, Adam Alexander Jardine, and his mousy wife. Do Jardine's outspoken denouncements of the Anglican Church's strict divorce laws have a personal motive? When he meets the cool and beautiful Lyle Christie, Mrs. Jardine's companion, Ashworth believes they do. But as he struggles to understand the strange relationships in the household, Ashworth ceases to be an innocent, objective observer. Slowly, he too is drawn into the secret drama that is being played out in the shadow of the cathedral, a drama that he could never have foreseen. The first in Susan Howatch's acclaimed novels centering on the glorious Cathedral of Starbridge, Glittering Images is a masterful depiction of spiritual hubris, the seductions of power, and the moral dilemmas of England between the wars. From the Trade Paperback edition.

I‘ve recently reawakened my love for Howatch‘s books and re-read this novel which is all about #facades and what we hide behind our masks.

#FallFinds

rubyslippersreads I haven‘t read her books in ages. This sounds like a good one. 4y
Ruthiella I‘ve only read her Starbridge series and the first in her St. Benet‘s trilogy but I‘m pretty certain I would also love her historical sagas too! I read her pre-internet. 4y

Pickpick

I must have barely skimmed the synopsis of this series before downloading the first book because I remember being intrigued by hearing how polarized people‘s reactions tended to be, but I was at least halfway through before I realized that was because the entire series was historical fiction solely centered on politics, theology and spirituality in the Church of England. It‘s not a subject matter I‘d normally be drawn to, ⬇️⬇️⬇️

IndoorDame or one that seems to me to really match this cover, but I loved the writing style, and I did enjoy the character who is the subject of the next book, so I think I may keep reading for now... 4y

I‘m still reading and enjoying this because I‘m finding the psychological exploration of all the different characters fascinating. But I nearly bailed a few chapters back because a major plot point revolves around an ridiculously heteronormative definition of sex and I‘m incredibly pissed off even though I get that this was written in a different time.

Kindle says I‘ve read 26% of this book. It‘s not at all what I expected, but quite a good story so far.

I meant to take a photo of the blue glitter reindeer that currently sits on my desk at work, but I forgot, so you‘ll have to make do with this gold version. Mine is the same apart from ice blue in colour. It‘s from Poundland, and people merely have to look at it to end up covered in glitter.
